I know....it's a dumb question...and I am prepared to my hands and legs tied to a wall/cellar/bed for asking this.facepalm.gif
Let me guess: It was about 2:30am there?

They WERE better. I used to fly into Havana, and picvk up boxes of 25 Monte Christo #4's, duty-free, for $25./box. That was in the late 70's. Those were flat out the best cigars I've ever smoked. Todays Monte Christo #4 don't taste remotely the same, and they're 25 times the price..

While I agree this true, I also think that any major company that has their product made in China probably has applied tighter QA standards than many Chinese companies do on their own. I am certain this is not always the case, but I am not too concerned when I see that EAW or Apple has something made in China because I know they still have corporate standards to uphold. Asian manufacturing can be as good as it gets, as long as QA checks the final product. I care more about who stands behind the warranty, and the product design than I do about where assembly and manufacturing takes place. (Which should not be read to mean I don't care about American jobs. I am just commenting on quality, not international trade and economics.)

Hands tied to the bed? OK! wink.gif
ROFL! Its all about quality design, quality of parts used in the design, quality control, and quality support.
Apple just announced it is going to make one of their popular lines in the U.S.A.
I do not think that means that product is better if it is made here or there.
In defense of the great United States though a LOT of awesome stuff has come out
of America.

Oh no...I didnt meant it that way! LOL! Please pardon my poor expression in English.

TO be more accurate, I have always thought that American Made GUitars are superior to European made GUitars...same goes for Pro Audio products. I dont know...is this correct?...or is it just clever marketing from you Americans?

I got a few Cuban cigars in Moskow about 15 years ago. I personaly thought they were terrible (but I'd guess that's a matter of taste).

I'd say most countries make some great products and some really poor ones as well. In todays market it's hard to tell where a product (or which parts of the product) is actualy made anyway.

F.I. Germany makes some awsome mics but I have no problem with a Shure that is mostly made in Mexico and would love to own a Pleuso (which is made in China). EAW used to be made in America but for years they used Italian drivers. "B" gear is made in China but so is a lot of Yamaha gear (a Japanese company?).

Much like people. There are awsome ones & really bad ones (and a majority that are somewhere in the middle) but I think the ratio is pretty much the same anywhere in the world. You just have to judge each one as an individual (piece of gear that is).

I just can't find the words to comment on the other parts of your post..........sorry :-)

Well - the only place I know of this - is with Fender Guitars- where they offer an American Made version - and a foreign made version - of basically the same guitar - but indeed - they "do" pay attention to certain details in this effort - and yes - in this case - the "American" version - IS "better". Enough "better" to justify the difference in price ? - I don't know. There are also Genz Benz Amps - which (I think) are still "made in the states".

When a company "outsources" it's manufacturing to - oh say Korea (or China) - you can be sure that their concern is "price point". On the other hand - there is nothing that "says" that those Korean and Chinese "workers" aren't ging to be extremely motivated to "do a good job" - and I am thinking that the "brand new" Korean and Chinese manufacturing facilities are extremely clean - and efficient - (what they might not be is particularly "humane").

This is all a "study" in capitalism - whereas - some might prefer - some sort of "study" in socialism - where the emphasis could be put on "workng conditions" and "sustainability"?

Peace Out - Flame On.

Great post.

(I am SO trying not to think of someone called "stunning babe" suggesting that she is ready to be tied to a bed.) (Probably just something cultural - that I am unable to recognize.)

Genz benz amps are made in Taiwan I think. They are designed and inspected in USA. Some or all of their cabs are made in USA from what I remember. I own a European made Spector and a Korean made Lakland and both are some of the nicest basses I have ever played.

Since you're asking specifically about guitars........................I would say the average mass production level guitar from Gibson or Fender is probably not much better than some of the foreign offerings. Not to say they are poor guitars, they certainly are not!!!!!!!!!!!!! But when you get into the arena of the "Custom Shop" level then the differences get greater. As a guitar player (and I build also) I haven't seen many overseas guitars that floored me. Then to address the next level, the US also has a plethora of small-shop custom luthiers that produce some simply incredible instruments. I don't know if this vocation is as popular in other countries but it is big time here and there are some really good builders you've never heard of. CNC technology leveled a lot of the playing field for mass producing decent instruments but available wood selection, hardware, marketing and of course a test bed like Nashville gives the US a fairly significant edge IMO. And Stunningbabe...you really need to be careful with your English, you nearly killed a couple of these guys.

I have a couple of Korean Laklands and a Korean Spector, and they compare quite favorably with my 1972 American made Jazz Bass.

It depends. Products built outside of the USA aren't necessarily of lower quality, but normally American companies will build their high-end products in the US to higher QC standards.

I play a mexican built Fender Strat, and three mexican Fender basses. I've played hundreds of shows with them and flown them all over the country but they still sound and play great.
