      Totally. Guitarists always talk about "tube warmth" and "musical breakup" and then only mic the speakers... you need to mic the tubes if you really want to capture the real musical nature of tube amps.

      I think it might have been a sound guy trying to get it through the guitarists head that he was too loud? It's a Sennheiser MD421 mic sitting there! Not cheap and certainly done intentionally. Unless we just aren't in on the joke?

      I think this is the approach they used for Syd Barrett in the latter years when they didn't even have him through the mix...
