  • Ohm question.....

I have a PA head that delivers 400 watts per side @ 4 ohms. My mains are 8 ohm JBLs. Is there a way, without adding any other drivers/cabinets, to make the amp see a 4 ohm load?

    ....without ruining the existing gear?

OK I'll bite. The amplifier is dependant on the speakers as to what overall wattage is produce. I'm guessing the powered head is rated somewhere around 250 @ 8. Each speaker will recieve a maximum of 250w. You could put both speakers on 1 amp channel and the 400w would be split between them (200w ea). As is, there is no way to modify the speakers so they are 4ohm. It isn't a bad thing either, don't overthink this.

      Overthink????

If I gang them up like that , I'll lose stereo. I'm going to pt a couple of smaller 8 ohm cabs in line I guess.

I just thought there might be a dummy load type of device out there somewhere.... I guess not.

    Loudspeaker connections

    Series formula  R1+R2 = Rtotal

    Parallel formula R1 X R2 / R1 + R2 = Rtotal

    / indicates "divided by"

I forgot to mention that I'm as dumb as a bag of hammers so I'm wondering if you could draw me a picture.

....like you're trying to explain this to a 7 year old.....:smileyembarrassed:
