Moderators MrKnobs Posted September 8, 2013 Moderators Share Posted September 8, 2013 I really like that they're a lot lighter as I'm not getting any younger.Do neo speaks have any characteristic sound compare to conventional magnets? If so, how would you characterize the sound?Terry D.
Members kevintyler
imo they sound the same, however when you push anything with a coil, it gets hot, both types deal with heat differntly i guess and i undesrtand in the case of neo's the heat effects the strenght of the flux, just treat them nice they will be fine. kev
Members agedhorse
Heat with Neo speakers has been a total non-issue from almost the beginning. This had been solved by using appropriate grades of materials, with high Currie temps. Neo speakers CAN be designed with more extended high frequency response due to the location of the magnetic material within the magnetic structure. It can also be designed to mimic the response of a traditional ceramic magnetic circuit of just about anything the designer desires..
Members dboomer
People hear "differences" because they are not listening to the identical values so they are not comparing apples to apples. If the magnetic field in the gap were identical with different magnet materials there would be zero difference.
Members agedhorse
Other than the placement of the magnetic material within the pole piece which changes the effective circuit inductance (lowers) increasing the hf response. It's like adding a shorting ring to the pole.
Members dboomer
Agreed ... but that is a difference due to design and not magnet material. Typically designs are likely be a little different, but if the only change is magent material then there is no difference.
Members kevintyler
I like to build identical cabinets and load them with pressed steel and cast ,neo and ferrite etc. Get the lads around to pick out the duffers. Surprising sometimes which comes out on top in the likeability tests.
