Members Dogoth
Exactly correct. Also short and to the point. Possibly a little more about impedance could have been in there but then again it might get too long and wordy for most. Yes it's a Hi z unbalanced to Lo z balanced device. Interesting that with most passives, Hi z is somewhere between 50k and 200k ohms where as an active unit should be in the mega ohm realm. We seem to have a few indistinct terms in audio such as hi and low impedance (not assigned any exact number or even range). The same can be said for mic level, instrument level & line level. I'd define these as -50db, -20db & +4db respectively but what about consumer line level (-10db) or an exceptionally hot condenser mic (-40db ?). They're just guidelines but a 10 db difference can be huge when you're trying to gain stage your system properly. Also (even though it's not hoyle and there is a voltage loss due to impedance mis-match), a D.I. with a stout enough transformer can be used backwards to balance a line INTO an unbalanced unit (with an XLR turn around). In a pinch....... :-). Good simple video. Thanks
