Plexiglass question?

If you put a Mic on then kick drum with a plexiglass shield like you see on some stages, would you need to gate the kick drum so it wouldn't feedback bouncing off the plexiglass or would it be better to put some foam around the bottom of plexiglass so it would dampen it some? Thanks.

Recorded recently with a shield on the drums and had no problem with feedback at all. I feel like the shield would help fight feedback by not letting the speaker signal reach the microphone....unless you had a drum monitor in the cage... Most of this is just assumptions though.

I wouldn't worry about the kick mic sound bouncing around, it's already doing that inside of the kick. I'm echoing the opinions that feedback shouldn't be any more of an issue, and possibly less, with a shield. But as stated, that's assuming there's not an out of control drum monitor as part of the equation.

For years, I've played (guitar) in a casino around town that just added drum monitors a little while back. Although it had a major impact on the stage and the drummer's sound, it didn't bring on any feedback issues. The drum monitor was an EV SxA250 at reasonable volume. Subs were four EV single 18's, can't remember the tops.

The reflections off of plexi can be perplexi'ng (pun intended) but they rarely cause feedback issues (more HF problems and certainly not kick). It will definitely change the sound you get into your tom, snare, hat and (sometimes) OH mics. FWIW I usually gate the kick anyway (as little as possible) just in case the subs decide to take off or it's a resonant riser.

Rarely an issue w/ kick drum mics in my experience. Sometimes can pick up reflections when using cheaper mics on overheads, etc. (our backup set of CAD mics comes to mind) but when using the Audix drum mics almost never a problem because of the shield... it solves more problems than it creates.
