Google Alerts for used gear searches

For those with G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) maybe this is a known thing already, but I just figured it out and thought I'd pass it along. Google alerts work very well for searching Craigslist, as well as other sites, in near real time. It's a good way to search for something rare that you just can't find. You never know when it will pop up somewhere.

http://www.google.com/alerts

Here's an example for a Craigslist search for RCF or FBT items:

Search query: RCF OR FBT site:craigslist.org

Result type: Everything

Language: English

Region: United States

How often: As-it-happens (can adjust to less frequently if you get updates too often)

How many: ALL RESULTS - This is critical or you will get no results

Deliver to: your gmail address or feed (yes, you'll need a google account)

Notes

  • You can use qualifiers like “OR” and “AND”. They must be capitalized to work. You can use these for the item your searching for as well as sites.
  • The alert isn't going to give you results from the distant past. It will return things posted up to a day ago initially and then give you near real time alerts of anything posted from now on.

Tested sites that work

craigslist.org musicgoround.com

tradingpost.sweetwater.com

used.guitarcenter.com

ebay.com - you’ll want to include the catagory your item would be in. For example a speaker would be ebay.com/sch/Speakers-Monitors-

pssl.com/Used

used.samashmusic.com

harmonycentral.com/forum/forum/ForSale

homerecording.com/bbs/special-forums/free-ads-music-recording-equipment/

reverb.com/item

yourinstrument.com/instruments

musiciansgaragesale.com/music-shop

performanceaudio.com/item/used-gear

elderly.com/vintage

Tested sites that DO NOT seem to work

domains that change their root when you get to the specific item will not work. For instance, musiciansfriend.com/used-musical-instruments loses the “used-musical-instruments” root when you click on a specific item. Therefore Google can’t search the used section of the site because the items aren’t tagged as used in the URL.
