I think Wagon Wheel is the only bona fide slam dunk for everybody. Like most songs, it's mostly about how well you sell it. Turn on your local hot AC or country station- those are the songs the most people will be familiar with. Whichever ones translate best to you are your best bets. I know how unhelpful that is, but there really are almost no guaranteed hits anymore.

I did "Counting Stars" by One Republic the other night, which in my neck of the woods would count as a bit modern, but it went over well.

I am trying at the moment, to cover more 80's and have added "Land Down Under" and am just learning "China in your Hand" by t'Pau.

I watch a lot of The Voice type tv shows, just to hear what "up to date" covers they are doing and from that, last year I added "Budapest".

However these songs are used sparingly as a sop to my younger audience members and I quickly go back to my "Meat and Potatos" i.e. Beatles, Monkeys etc.
