What are folks using for tip jars? I have seen small cases , usually with CDs in them as well, and I do like the idea of lighting them up. But would love some suggestions as to what to put on the sign to encourage generosity.

For the solo act, I use either the traditional large brandy snifter [aka a terrarium ;) ] or I leave a guitar case open with a sign saying 'homeless...god bless' on it [j/k]. For the bues band we use a plastic jar, the label on which changes periodically, currently it says 'Roth IRA'...for the jam band [i think you saw this when we went out] they have a huge plastic jar labeled 'TIPS' with a flashing multicolor led unit in the bottom.

Depends on the gig.

Yacht clubs, country clubs, private parties - no tip jar.

Night clubs, Elks Lodges, Restaurants - small glass

Weekly outdoor gig, re-purposed plastic jar that used to hold mixed nuts and with a fishing sinker in the bottom to keep it from blowing over.

When we did cruise ships, we had a fish bowl with a ceramic cat sculpture looking like he was ready to catch a goldfish glued to the side.
