Members ElectricPuppy
Perhaps I missed the discussion on these during my absence, and Search wasn't helpful. I just happened to run across this while perusing MF: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-KX61-USB-Keyboard-Studio-Controller?sku=706167 First, I had no idea that Yamaha was planning to resurrect the KX line. Second, I *sincerely* hope that these are built better than the toys that seem to pass as controllers from everyone else lately. Lastly, are these maybe just rebadged CMEs? I thought I read somewhere that Yamaha and CME were in some kind of partnership...? Anyone have insight into these? Or can point me at the relevent thread? Members electrobaby
Yamaha and CME are no longer connected in any partnership so they are not rebadge CMEs....not sure of the quality but I saw them at Namm and they seemed pretty nice actually. Members girevik
Somebody brought up this topic a few months back and there was some bitching about how the older KXs were better quality and whatnot. USB controller-only keyboards tend to be lower quality than keyboard synths (thank you, M-Audio - and my Novation Remote 25 had stuck key problems which didn't help my perception of USB controllers). I guess most of the negative reaction was due to this low-class perception of USB keyboards and skepticism over whether Yamaha was offering anything really new. Members ElectricPuppy
I was also a bit dismayed to see only 4 knobs on the thing. {censored}, I've got that NOW on my age-old KX88. When they become available, I'm gonna head to GC to check one out, just so I can either confirm my worst fears or be pleasantly surprised. Recent trends don't bode well, though. I think this largely has to do with the fact that USB controllers, at least from the manufacturer's p.o.v., were meant to be studio devices and therefore don't need to be "road-rugged" instruments meant for touring/playing on stage, although many people do use them that way. I just upgraded my toylike M-Audio Radium 61 and got an Axiom 61, which is a little more solidly-built.

Members mildbill
Here's some thoughts about those boards, from when they were announced: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1854657&highlight=yamaha%27s+new+controllers
Members ElectricPuppy
Ah, thanks, Mild. I just knew there had to have been a discussion on these things already. How sad that they look like they're just gonna be more price-point toys.
