Creating effective analog subtractive Bass patches

Anyone have some favorite tips or tricks with regards to creating effective analog subtractive Bass patches? I'm using a CS50, but of course the principles should apply to most synths. Most recently I've found that keeping the envelopes clean by using short Attack and Release times helps prevent the sound from getting overly muddy, but this seems like a pretty basic principle... so what are some more advanced techniques or observations? Does anyone have some favorite 'tricks' they use to get extra expression, more playable patches, deeper bass, clearer enunciation of performance, etc.?

Thanks
