Members pamackie
I have an old Yamaha SY55, probably 20 years old at this point. It has a MIDI out, with some ungodly number of pins, about the size of an XLR jack. Can I connect this ancient thing to a laptop and use it as a MIDI controller? If so, what equipment do I need to make it run? (adapters, software, etc.) If I can't use the keyboard I have, how can I get a nice MIDI control rig set up, preferably for less than $700? Members zzzxtreme
MIDI out? Get a USB-Midi cable like the ESI Midi Mate. Plug & Play and enjoy your softsynths! http://www.mtecmusic.com/catalog/images/midimate.jpg
Members pamackie
What's a good softsynth for vintage sounds like mellotron, Rhodes piano, etc? I guess technically I'm looking more for a sampling software.

Members Yoozer
MIDI out? Get a USB-Midi cable like the ESI Midi Mate ...but probably version 2 or a different brand since the first gave me a few BSODs. Do keep in mind to connect the MIDI out to the synth's MIDI in, otherwise you'll be puzzled for like half an hour why nothing's working. As for the software synthesizers, not all of 'm may have standalone versions, so a host is recommended (think Cubase, Reaper, Sonar, Logic, Ableton Live, FL Studio, etc.).
