Using Roland MC-505 with a MIDI Keyboard

I have very little experience with synths/sequencers, being a guitarist, but a friend of mine gave me a Roland MC-505 that he no longer wanted and I was hoping to be able to use the organ and several of the synth tones that are built into the banks with my band. The problem is the "keys" that are on the front are very limited and not intuitive for someone who is used to just playing a regular keyboard.

It may be a dumb, easy-to-answer question, but say I buy a Alesis Q49 or whatever other MIDI keyboard I happen to choose and hook it up to the MIDI input on the back of the MC-505, does it then open up the full 49 key range of the keyboard with whatever sound I choose? I would prefer not to have to spend a bunch of money buying a keyboard with all those kinds of sounds and programming built in if I can just get a cheaper MIDI keyboard and use that. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!
