Members OPEN OCEAN
Its a kind of psychological question i would say that came in my mind today while i was fixing my Yamaha Dx9 vintage synth, actually it was an easy fix related to the keybed, after that the beast kept me busy for almost an hour editing sounds and in general dealing with it its in a really bad condition but i love it, a fact that never happens personally when i have to do with modern keys or even worst PC based virtual instruments. Any thoughts would be great.
Members RockPianoman
I used to use many older synths but I prefer newer romplers now.....I can get things done in a fraction of the time on them.....if you like DX7 technology, get a used TG77 on Ebay as the DX7 is greatly improved over older models and it has many fully programmable effects built in.....buy a USB to MIDI cable on Ebay for $5.00 and download the free SY Manager and you will be able to store unlimited amounts of banks on your computer and back them up to DVD...(the SY77 / TG77 / SY99 all have DX7 built in that has big improvements like 45 algorithms instead of 32 and they also have RCM where built in samples can interact with DX7 voices plus a huge display by comparison.... All the DX7 sounds in older DX7's kinda have that too familiar "DX7" flavor to every sound but in the SY77 / TG77 / SY99, the DX7 sounds sound like samples with all the programmability that the DX7 is famous for plus a full effects section that the older DX7's never had....I still have a TX802 and DX7IIFD with Grey Matter E in storage but I never use them....the TG77's DX7 is way better.....the FM in the TG77 is called AFM.....you'll recognize the DX7 parameters in these 2 photos: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s6bb1gb0g6...77%20-%202.JPG https://www.dropbox.com/s/0xdwo4kmtg...77%20-%204.JPG Ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40 But back on the subject, I have a Yamaha Motif ES6 and a Roland XV-3080, Roland XV-5050, Korg Karma, Yamaha Motif Rack, Yamaha TG77 and these pieces set me miles ahead of what I was able to make with older synths......they are sooooo much quicker to get the sound you are searching for.....I've had sooooo many vintage synths but when I got these, I never used them anymore and sold them....I know there are tons of newer romplers, but when you make your own sounds on these (especially with the Roland XV-3080) you can make totally original sounds easily (the Roland XV-3080 is more than a rompler to layer sounds....it has real synth parameters in it that are totally unlimited).... The Roland XV-3080 can also access over 1000 user voices from the Smart Media card WITHOUT LOADING....just create a folder called Roland and put all your sound banks in that folder and you can access the first 8 banks of 128 from the A - H banks buttons without loading and you have the 128 voice user bank on top of that !!! These sell for about $300 used on Ebay which is a real bargain (128 note polyphony)..... Looking at what I use, I guess I do use all old stuff.....just not as old as I used to use..... The Yamaha P-35 piano for $449 new is a super deal for acoustic piano recording (88 fully weighted keys)..... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/keybo...-digital-piano http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/P35B/ I recorded this demo of my P-70 piano using my Motif ES6.....the P-35 is the current version and is pretty much identical... https://www.dropbox.com/s/ho44l6cs9h...-70%20Demo.mp3
Members Roland_McDonald
They bring back good memories, just like older cars do. They are also usually, easier to use. And they are better looking in most cases.
Members Etienne Rambert
Older digital synths with lower sample bit rates sound different - and often better - than the modern synths. I still use an old 8 bit Kawai K1 for string pad sounds. Nothing sounds like that today. Nothing.
Members Outkaster
Better build quality and in some cases better sounds.
