Members WRGKMC Posted March 3, 2014 Members Share Posted March 3, 2014 You can get all kinds of deals these days, even with your top brands.Watch out you dont fall into the trap that bigger is better. Classic PAF pickups will have an impedance between 7.5 kΩ to 9.0 kΩMany manufactures tout more winds as being better, like its some kind of big engine block in a car. The truth is gain gose up slightly with the loss of frequency ranges especially in the higher frequencies untill its nothing but midrange mud. A lower wound pickup will have wider frequency response as it gets weaker in sensitivity. The gives ideal power vs frequency responce.Some manufacturers have been able to design hot wound pickups by varying the magnet strength and still get good fidelity. You wont find that on your budget no named pickups. They all buy the same magnets so watch out for the overwound ones. They can make a guitar sound awful. You can always add more gain to a guitar using stomp boxes and reduce trebble with am amps EQ, but you cant make an overwould pickup sound like a normal pickup. It will retain its honkey midrange tone, lack treble and sound muted when turned down when attempting to make it sound clean. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
