Hollow-necked guitar

I remember reading about a guitar with a hollowed out metal neck, kind of a sitar thing with movable frets and no fingerboard.. anyone know what I'm talking about?

Travis Bean guitars (http://www.travisbeanguitars.com/) had hollow metal necks, but so far as I know they were all fronted with conventional fingerboards.

 

Then there's this very strange bird (http://www.en-derin.com/technology/gittler-guitar-features-striking-minimalist-design-with-ergonomic-features#)... sort of a sitar-like thing, with no fingerboard. But the frets are still fixed.

I saw one of those things in some guitar mag back in the 1980's.
