Members Michael Blue
Well, I'm going to do it...I'm going to post my first post in the "Phil O'Keefe: In The Studio Trenches" forum. I'm a total n00b to HC, and I've been spending most of my time in the KSS and Songwriting sections, but this is an area I'm going to need advice in, as well, so here goes... I've been writing and recording since the early-mid '80s, and have primarily been working on keyboards, synths and the like. I have some guitar, bass and sax (tenor and alto) experience as well, and I play drums nearly ever week at my church. I started out on 4-track tape decks (still have a Yamaha MT100) and later turned to PC-based recording. I've not yet gotten into PC-based instruments, though I'm sure that's around the corner as well...Gonna need a better PC. For many years, this has been just a hobby. Sure, I'd love to do more with it, but everytime there looked like a small possibility, it quickly vaporized. People generally say my work sounds like pro-level soundtrack material, which I take as a huge compliment. I've been told it's similar to many different people, some I'm sure almost no one here's heard of (Mark Heard, Terry Taylor, Gene Eugene, Michael Roe), and some you have (Jan Hammer, Peter Gabriel, DePeche Mode, etc.). I have literally thousands of pieces recorded to tape over the years, and likely a hundred so far in digital. Recently I decided to make a new, concerted effort to really do something with the studio, or sell everything but one small keyboard for personal enjoyment only. Since I can't do that, I went ahead and moved into a bigger, nicer room and expended my equipment. http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-15.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-16.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-17.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-18.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-19.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-20.jpg http://www.michael-blue.com/Images/Music/MyStudio-21.jpg The Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0, AKG Perception 220 and M-Audio Studiophile BX5a's are all new, and this is what I finally believe I can truly call a "Project Studio". Some of my stuff is posted here, newer stuff at the top (it's all scratch-demos, except the KDOT stuff, which isn't mine alone). I'm currently working on what will likely become an Indie Alternative Christian project (Michael Blue - Echoes), and I've got some of the marketing and production already sorted out...With a lot of thanks to Oasis CD. Can't wait to actually order my CDs and finally become a client, lol! Making use of their "tools of promotion" program should help a LOT. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone here who's used them in the past. Anyways...That's my story...I welcome all feedback on the studio, equipment, MP3s...Whatever...Thanks! Members Michael Blue
Thanks! I just noticed I had the same pic linked each time...Fixed.
Members Weatherbox
I'd seriously consider getting those monitors off the wall and away from the corner.
Members Michael Blue
I'd seriously consider getting those monitors off the wall and away from the corner. Eventually they're going to be on a Studio RTA Producer's Station, but for now they're 5" from the wall and like 24" out of the corner......What kind of distances do you recommend? Thanks! Members Etienne Rambert
Nice synths. I wish I could get a decent synth where I live.
Phil O'Keefe
Hi Michael, welcome! Nice rig - I'm jealous over the Oasis. As far as your monitoring position, the closer a speaker is to the corner, the more the bass buildup is likely to be on that side. Ideally, you'd want to try to get the two speakers at about ear level when you're seated in front of them, and spaced equal distance from each side wall - IOW, ideally you'd want your monitoring / mixing station right in the middle of one of the walls. Members Michael Blue
Re: Monitors...I'll have to look into that, I'm certain the layout isn't permanent yet...I've been in the new room 2 weeks and have moved it once already, lol! Right now I'm having to determine what length cords I need to get all the synths to reach the MultiMix at once... I am also looking into some acoustic panels. Re: Oasis...They're a CD duplication service with a promotion program...I think maybe you thought I meant I had a Korg Oasys, in which case, I'd be jealous of myself. Sorry if I wasn't clear...No, my humble Triton Pro 76 has been serving me well so far...I hope to update to a 73-key (why not 76?!) M3 with the EXB-Radias expansion, possibly this winter...But that's as close as I get to the Oasys unless Ed McMahon decides to visit. Thanks for all the feedback guys! Members i51423
I am also looking into some acoustic panels. I would seek out a dealer for some OwenCorning 703 or 705 and cover them in cloth yourself. Last I checked, prices were around $100 for a bundle of 9 2'x4' sheets. You'll save a ton of money that way. Just make sure you can breathe through whatever fabric you use.

I have not had any dealings with the company he linked to, but a quick glance at their site indicates in addition to pre-made units, they sell cloth covers and raw mineral wool separately too, so he could DIY with their products if he so desired.
