Members Ron Kat
If a project/song and all of its individual tracks were entirely recorded in 16 bit... and now in the "mastering" stage the songs are being run through a waves L2 Maximizer in order to increase the tracks overall loudness, does dithering need to be applied in this final stage if I am staying in 16 bit? The songs wil be burnt down to a CD that will be in turn be sent to a duplication facility for mass production. Thanks for any help on this confusing topic! Members Manny
You don't need to dither because the project was recorded at 16 bits already.
Phil O'Keefe
Personally, I'd try it both ways and see which one you prefer. Dither adds low level, random noise in order to deal with quantizing errors on low level signals (down near the LSB), so it may help, or it may not. LISTEN and see what way sounds best to you!
