We're running out of bluegrass pioneers. Good thing they had good students.

I never saw The Stanley Brothers live, but saw Ralph with his band on a few occasions. One was with what I think was the best band he had since Carter died, the band with Kieth Whitley, Ricky Scaggs, and, I think [edited] Roy Lee Centers on lead guitar and Jack Cook on bass. They played on a week night in a dive bar in Lorton, VA, about 20 miles from my home. The place was packed with local bluegrass musicians (that was about 20), and the usual handful of loud drunks, That was back in the day when you could go to a dive bar and hear bluegrass around here any weekend.

Dr. Ralph Stanley (awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee in 1976) will be truly missed. It was wonderful to hear his voice again in 'O Brother Where Art Thou?" That movie introduced a lot of folks to old timey and bluegrass music, and many heard Ralph Stanley for the first time and became fans.

His son (Ralph Stanley II) is still carrying on the tradition.
