What Would Happen If Moderators Stopped Posting?

Something I've noticed since back on the Musicplayer days is that the less active the moderator, the less active the forum in general tends to be. Anyone remember how slow Roger Nichols' forum was towards the end after they quit paying him and he wasn't posting much anymore? It became a ghost town.

So yes, I do think moderator participation is important, but it's not going to up the site traffic by itself. We can help stimulate the discussions and maybe throw some things out for consideration, but ultimately the forums rely on all of you to make them work. :)

PS For the record (and not to blow my own horn... :o )' date=' I've always been a very active poster on HC. My post count didn't get that big strictly on the basis of recent posts alone... ;)[/quote']

Yes, you`ve always been very active. I`m just wondering what would happen if you guys deliberately stopped posting and did not start any threads.

That would be like a radio talk show host saying "I'm not going to say anything or do an opening monologue, why don't you just call in or something, we have phones 'n' stuff."

It would be like if the Cooks at the Diner quit cooking. This place is lucky to be populated with very good and engaged Moderators.

Just wondering how much activity has truly picked up?

Alexa.com will tell you. Steady increase through July and August. We're back in the top 20K USA and back in the top 40K world-wide. Global rank up 2,343 in the last 90 days.

It seems that Mods have really been participating a lot more recently than they did in the past.

We have a reason to live now. :)

Anyone else notice or have some #s on this?

Out of the 20 threads on the current front page, 4 were started by moderators. On page 2, 7. On page 3, 6. seems we're pretty much doing what's expected from forum moderators.

I deleted it accidentally' date=' I created a test topic to answer Mike's question and deleted the wrong topic...wasn't paying close enough attention.[/quote']

You gotta pull yourself away from those vintage guitar porn sites Craig. Lust won't get you Duane Allman's Gold Top Bro.

I would start more threads and then... well... there goes the neighborhood. :D

But seriously I have noticed over the years that forums where the mods don't participate seem abandoned and die out. IMO mods and admins are there for a reason... they bring expertise and credibility to a site beyond their ability to effectively moderate discussions. Knowledge of the topics, good temperament and judgement and all that. :)

If the moderators stopped posting:

10. Beck would declare himself Moderator Supreme, Omnipotent, Omniscient and Buff

9. Blue would verbally attack Beck, they would go at it hammers and tongs and the overall average post length for the entire site would soon break the internet

8. with no authority figures left to troll and irritate, the OJ would gradually turn into a forum for helping others do their homework

7. the Songwriter's Forum would see no change whatsoever

6. Phil would have time to mow the lawn (no more excuses!!)

5. Ras would ask "what is a guitar for?" and there would be no one who could answer that question

4. Dendy would start a new forum called What Would Mike Huckabee Do? and the first (and last) post would be Huckabee saying "Glad you asked that question!"

3. Craig would seriously consider taking up skywriting in order to keep providing us with his great tips and tricks

2. Mike Rivers would probably not notice that anything was different

1. Ken Lee would post one of his Joshua Tree photos and everywhere there would be peace and brotherhood for five minutes, just like there was when The Beatles performed All You Need Is Love on the first worldwide satellite broadcast.

yeah, the Alexa figures look good, albeit that TGP is ranked 6158 in US and 22.645 in the world (down 4300 places in the past 3 months), but that could be because TGP is highly unpopular in India.

And I've just looked at the top 20000 US sites where HC is 15297 (together with pure-nudistsdotcom) but still behind avocadocentraldotcom which is 15201.
