For sure it's been coming for a while, but sad to see it here:

Good. I always hated spending up to $32 for an LP and have only one song that was ear catching on it.Singles are back in style, yeah! Now if they'd go back to the good ole days for 39 cents each.

As the op-ed piece linked to in the opening post acknowledges, the soundtrack to Frozen went multi-platinum this year; so the title of this thread applies to recording artists rather than all categories of sales.

Also, despite the admonitions of the article that the record labels are arrogant, ignorant, stuck in the mud, and in danger of extinction, they appear to be adjusting to the new landscape. Universal Music Group revenue increased 7.5% last year.

It's all about the paradigm shift in how music is accessed by consumers. Platinum albums are determined by certified sales figures. People don't buy records so much anymore, so that is an outdated metric.

Today it's not about sales - it's about plays and streaming.

It's clearly Guido61's fault. And Mark L for not being signed.

I actually just preordered the new Eric Johnson/Mark Stern cd. First cd I've bought in maybe 3 years.

Actually, I probably bought 20-25 full albums this year. About 1/2 of those were downloads.

Someone had better change the title of this thread, because Taylor Swift has just sold 1.287 million copies of her new album, 1989, in its first week of release:

I thought Lana Del Rey moved a million of her latest Ultraviolence?

RIAA certifications are for US sales only. Lana Del Rey's album moved over a million worldwide, but nowhere near than in the US alone.
