Weird recording experiences

I'll start...

I was stuck in the Atlanta airport for huuuuuge layover because a flight to Europe was canceled. I wanted to record their security message to chop up and use in a tune, and as it was like 11 PM or something, I figured that was my chance.

The message was on a 20 minute loop, so I had only three shots an hour to get the full recording. And it seemed each time, something happened to screw up the recording...someone talking, some other announcement, etc.

So then I realized the place to go would be the bathroom. Great acoustics, and hardly any traffic. But the first pass, someone flushed at the wrong moment. Time to try again.

I found where the PA speaker was in the ceiling, waited fifteen minutes, and stood on top of my suitcase while stretching my arm to the max to hold the mic right up to the speaker (I was recording into Minidisc). The message started, levels were great, and I thought all was well...

Then this guy walks into the bathroom, sees me, and does a double-take. At that EXACT moment, the message was saying "Report any suspicious persons, or unusual activities, to your nearest law enforcement agent." The guy immediately turned around and left the bathroom...which was great, because I was able to record the entire message without any toilet flushes.

And I didn't get arrested either!

So that was YOU. :D

Well, howdy there, Craig. Nice furniture! Not a bad view, either...that one window...mountains! Wow! And that other window...those gals catching some rays on the roof with their tops off...:D

Now I see why you wanted to come over here...:D

Oh, BTW...brought you a little forum-warming present...where do you want it?

I took a really cool sampling class in college where we'd walk around town with a little DAT deck and a stereo mic and try to record all kinds of random stuff. We pushed a hubcap that we found down an empty stairwell and I was able to get a really cool exotic sounding pecussion loop that I acidized and still use to this day!

I've been doing that kind of stuff years... and they teach it in schools??

:wow:

I actually just found some of my old samples (from an S-550).

*remembers the good ol' days*

I still like using found sounds in my music, but I tend to over tweak the sounds.

I remember my bassist was taking a class and got to bring home a portable reel to reel to mess with. We went outside to try to record some cool stuff, but found much more humor and enjoyment in recording our farts. We had a whole reel of *rrripp* *giggles* *pthththhtht* *giggles* *shhh* *giggles* *shhhhh!* *rrrrrriiip* *loud giggles*

Humor rules! That's funny stuff!

I'm so happy to be here today.

First of all I don't have many "HERO"'s.

Mel Gibson might fit the catagory

When I was a kid , Mort Drucker, the guy who drew the movie spoof cartoons in Mad Magazine was one for sure..... and

In the almost thirty tears of collecting Guitar player, Keyboard, Electronic Musician magazines, the biggest cudo's in the world of music information decemination have to go to the one tower of influence (and someone the media needs more of

in the printed word "CRAIG ANDERTON"

I used to go 'round complaining that the

entire Japaneze instrument manufacturers industry should get serious about communicating to their sales base and get Craig Anderton to write their operation manuals. I love you man!

I think I heard that in a Depeche Mode song...

One of the guys I play with works in a hospital with this old marble stairwell - it's probably terrazo - anyway, he's always wanted to record there wieh mics in different places because of the incredible reverb/echo dynamics. I guess some of the old big studios had marble hallways they used for reverb chambers, so it makes sense that a stairwell might have the same characteristics.

Craig, if you could have timed a flush, it might have been the icing on the sample cake. "If you see any suspicious person, please WHOOOOSH."

I wish I could have recorded the customs agents going thru my bags at Logan airport in August of '69. These two guys in dark suits were searching my luggage, while on the other side of a thin door, other agents were questioning some man who was speaking a language I couldn't identify. They kept raising their voices, as if that would make him understand.

"DO YOU HAVE ANY GOLD, ANY JEWELRY?"

Meanwhile, my agents kept asking me if I had a flashlight in my bags between questions about the dope at the parties I must have attended in Paris.

"DO YOU HAVE ANY GOLD IN YOUR BAGS, ANY JEWELRY?"

A knock on the door of our little room and another guy in a suit whispers to one of the customs agents with me. They tell me I'm free to go, so I cram my stuff back into my bags and they open the door. There's a line of at least twenty people waiting to be searched. I leave as they escort another traveller into their lair, and just as the door closes,

"SIR, DID YOU BRING ANY GOLD, ANY JEWELRY WITH YOU?"

That foreign visitor and I, I think we both frustrated justice that day. The delay made me miss my plane, so I spent the night on some fiberglass benches feeling mellow and thankful it didn't get to the level of stomach pump and cavity search.

We had heard talk of a big concert that coming weekend in upstate New York, not far from Boston. Creedence and Hendrix were on the bill and I really wanted to go. Damn.

I just gotta say-

Craig, you rule!

I've done stuff like that too, but never in such an interesting way.. :D

Trying to record some race track sounds took me 3 trips to the races before i got anything i could use though. One of the times one of the track security guys freaked out on me, and wanted to take the tape from me. I don't remember the specific words, but he said something along the lines of

"Race track sounds are the Official Property Of Southern Oregon Speedway! Unauthorized distribution is illegal!!"

He wasn't very sure of himself as he said that, so I was able to talk him out of taking away any of my equipment. $5 says he's a rent-a-body that also does concerts at the expo and stuff....
