R.I.P., Nikki Bacharach

Nikki Bacharach, the only child of legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach and then-wife, actress Angie Dickinson, committed suicide last Thursday evening in Thousand Oaks, California:

The recording of the song you will most often hear these days is an instrumental version complete with lush strings, a backing choir and a gently soaring saxophone solo that rises up out of the brass section. But in 1966 when Burt Bacharach penned "Nikki" for his prematurely born daughter, there were accompanying lyrics courtesy of his long-time writing partner, Hal David, that spoke of good times and bad: "Nikki, where can you be? It's you, no one but you for me. I've been so lonely since you went away. I won't spend a happy day till you're back in my arms."

The ABC Movie of the Week began in 1970. The famous theme song "Song For Nikki" was written by Burt Bacharach and is on one of his early 70's albums.

Just as an aside: the only vocal version of "Nikki" I know of is sung by Ed Ames, of the Ames Brothers.
