Will this be called racism?

Kids of all races and backgrounds dress like idiots, and they always have.

This isn't a new story, BTW: cities started creating laws in this regard several years ago.

Here in LA, the fashion is already over, so no big deal. In fact, I see kds wearing crotch-hugging corduroys now. Equally dumb looking, but I had some really horrible fashion sense back then too, so who am I to talk?

How is it racist? The people who dress like that here are a pretty good representation of the population percentage wise. I see just as many whites and hispanics as blacks dressing like that. I guess it's probably different in different areas though.

I did not say it's racism. I was looking at the picture and the profiling.

Just found this interesting! I believe if you dress like a criminal then don't get pissed of if people think you are one. Same with if I dress like a rock star, I would see myself as being very stupid getting angry if someone asked me if I was a rocker.

Your thoughts.

I wouldn't call is "racist" because many young white males that are into the hip-hop scene wear their pants in the same style. It's more of a "freedom of expression" thing.

I wasn't inferring you said it was racism. I was asking why you think others may think it's racist. You can't tell what race the people in the picture are. I understand the concerns raised in the article but in my experience that type of fashion isn't something only worn by blacks.

No, not racism. I do think it's fun to watch the low crotchers trying to run. Don't try to catch that bus or... clunk. It's pretty funny. But you know, the picture in the article doesn't show ass. It just shows a silly belt line. Ain't no crime in that. Show crack though, and I say throw you ass in the tank for a night. I do not want to see a bunch of skanky hip hop wannabes showing me their ass.

Otherwise, like I said, ain't no crime to actually be an ass.

I'd like to think it's not racist, but it's interesting that plumbers have never been targeted for doing the same thing.

It's a stupid law in any case, unless underwear and/or ass crack is showing, in which case it ought to be covered (pun intended) under existing indecency laws. Otherwise, if it's just saggy pants like the ones in the picture, it's crazy and certainly a civil rights issue if anyone bans it.

Are all plumbers white? I know what you're saying though. I think there are people who see all these 'thugs' on tv and are genuinely intimidated by people who dress that way. In my experience, people who dress that way don't do anything to counter those fears either.

We should all wear uniforms. Like, white suits with black ties. We'd look snappy! And no one would be scared of anything ever again.

Yeah. :freak:

Like you said, it's a stupid trend like any other stupid trend. And it'll blow over if it's allowed to blow over. Making it illegal just makes a WAY bigger deal of it than it is.

At the extreme end, wearing pants low enough to show boxers or bare buttocks in one small Louisiana town means six months in jail and a $500 fine.

I think this is the part that is racist.

In Louisiana you are more than four times more likely to be incarcerated if you are black. (per 100k of population SENTENCING PROJECT http://www.sentencingproject.org/StatsByState.aspx )

Yes it will surely be called racism or racial profiling by Al Sharpton and others. But stupid white kids have their butts hanging out as well. Yeah, throw their butts in jail.

I just saw the blurb on yahoo. This is stupidity at it's finest. Great to see our tax dollars being used constructively.

So, are they going to ban swimming suits, too? Same deal, wtf?

Here in my neck of the woods, you are not allowed to publicly wear a thong exposing the entirety of your buttocks.

This is sexist! I mean, how many men are doing this? And I can go topless, while women can't!

I AM OUTRAGED. I will not rest until we have equality for breasts!

Didn't the SC rule a few years back that women did have the right to not have a shirt on?

It is not racism. It is culturism. There is a huge difference. I am most definitely a culturist.

That's nothin'.

In Washington state we have serious sexism going on. There are WAY more men in prison than women!

God, I hope so.

But no... community standards and all that.

I found a few links...

Toplessness - or 'topfreedom' as it is now called by its proponents, to rid it of pornographic connotations - have been a feature of women's liberation since the 1960s, when feminists rebelled against wearing bras and would go half-clothed to women's festivals and other feminist events. But it is only recently that some women have started to go publicly about their daily business with nothing on above the waist.

This is partly because they have only recently discovered that it is perfectly legal for them to do so. In a decision in People vs Ramona Santorelli and Mary Lou Schloss, two activists in another movement, called the Coalition for Topfree Equality, the New York State court of appeals ruled last summer that women had the right to go barechested wherever men were allowed to. This meant, in effect, that they could do so not only when sunbathing in parks or on beaches, but also on the streets or in the subway.

A 1992 NY State Appeals Court ruling that we'll definitely keep in mind: Women have the right to go topless since men can show their chests whenever they want (like this guy).

ATTENTION WOMEN: YOU NOW HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE NAKED

Well, duh.

I noticed that many visitors came by trying to find out the article about the New York's law that give women the rights to be topless while riding the subway. Well, you can't find it
, now. The article was a daily This Is True feature from Randy Cassingham that I installed at the bottom of this page. But if you're still curious, try here. The article also summarized a similar decision in Canada that has wider impact. Women in Ontario reported "have taken this opportunity to sunbathe topless in their local parks."
