Members boosh Posted September 21, 2007 Members Share Posted September 21, 2007 It began two weeks ago when I was listening to a song on the carradio.I suddenly heared high pitched sounds that played together with the music. It is music for sure and I can clearly hear the instruments that are doing it. It sounds like the thing you get when you play flageolets on a guitar. I hear it with violins,guitars,keyboards etc etc.... I never ever heard it before but now I hear those sounds in every song. It almost sounds like a choir of elves singing melodies,..... I am allmost at the point starting to believe I actually never was able to hear harmoics or aliquotes,.... It seems like I'm hearing a new dimension of sound. Well at least for me a new one. Back to business... I not sure I've ever heard of anything quite like that. I can sort of imagine the sound from your description but I have to say that if you now hear this on every music source on every playback system, I'm pretty much stumped. I close my eyes and see colors,....basses are brownish and high pitched tones appear like golden or yellow,.... The lower the sound the darker the colors. This is a total new phenomenon. Even when the music is played very softly I can hear those high pitched harmonies very clearly,..... Last year when I visited van Gogh's museum together with Ken I realized I was able to hear music when looking at the paintings,... But these overtones as I now call them are new. Members motord Posted September 21, 2007 Members Share Posted September 21, 2007 Boosh, I have a theory as to what might be going on here. Have you had a cold or sinus congestion recently? It sounds like you may be experiencing a type of eustachian tube dysfunction. The eustachian tube runs from the back of the eardrum into the sinuses. It opens to equalize the pressure in your middle ear (that's what happens when your ears "pop"). A sinus infection or a nagging cold can cause the eustachian tube to get blocked, resulting in temporary hearing loss. The other thing that can happen is that the tubes can malfunction by staying partially open. This happened to me once, and to say it freaked me out does not even begin to describe it. I could hear all sorts of strange harmonics added to everything-- like the digital artifacts that result from less-than-judicious use of noise reduction software. I don't know exactly why, but something to do with resonances that don't normally occur due to the tubes being closed off. When it happened to me, it was only in the left ear. I saw my doctor several times, and he put me on a series of nasal decongestants, which eventually did clear it up. It took almost a month, unfortunately. If it keeps happening, I'd recommend going to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. They can very easily check if you have a negative-pressure situation in one or both ears, and they can also check to eustachian tube openings with a scope that's inserted through your nose. Have you ever had your ears candled? The ear candles are wax-covered muslin; you lay on one side, put them into your ear, and light them on fire (I know, I know...). They use a form of convection to soften and draw out deeply-embedded wax in your ear canals, the amount of which may surprise you. It may or may not help, but in any case, it feels really good and it's a good thing to do. Do some research on it; it's an ancient Egyptian technique. She was dead,....well not yet when I drove past her,....she was shaking her head and throwing up blood and rolling her eyes at that moment. Next day I read in the paper she died. The first time I had it I was struck by the profound "strangeness" of the feeling and the overall change to my perception. My world it seems is mostly in my ears. Our ears are a system. Dust and dirt, stress, infection and constant exposure to noise can throw them out of whack. Go to a specialist. Any doctor thinks they can lavage ears. Specialists do it more frequently (better). Sounds very similar to what Boosh is experiencing,except for me it was all sound....peoples voiceson the phone sounded "Mickey Mouse"My wife has a very high voice and I could hardly bear her talking......Very very freaky.... I'd be inclined to see a doctor before I stuck burning anything in my ears regardless of the purported benefits. I have a tendency to avoid using burning anything as a medicinal technique - but hey, that's just me. I made the mistake once of bringing my symptoms to a ham-handed internist. I won't do that again. Seeing a doctor might help rule out infections or the ETD thing. Boosh calls it a "problem", and that suggests that he is ready to do something about it. My grandfather was an ear specialist (this was a very long time ago) - The elbow admonition as I heard it was this. "Never stick anything in your ear - other than your elbow." It sounds as if you have a pitch shifter/harmonizer inserted somewhre between your ears and your brain. Does this occur when people speak, when you hear any sound or only when you listen to music? Members boosh Posted October 25, 2007 Author Members Share Posted October 25, 2007 Update : It seems like I never was able to hear certain frequencies or uppertones(I don't know the right word). A while ago I got hit on the head by a ladder and that may have caused an injury that corrected the handicap I always had but never knew I had it. I enjoy the sounds now and am even looking in every piece of music to hear them. Oh yeah Offramp...... doctors here don't cost a $. I can (painfully) hear the security systems in most malls/department stores. I can also (painfully) hear those ring tones the kids buy to not get caught with their cell in school...and I am 40.
