WHAT'S THE BEST GUITAR FOR YOU?

It's tough when you state such a wordly question.

If I play flat keys that need bass I don't use the same guitar that needs enough frets to make a 14th fret chord sound even and balanced.

No such thing as the best guitar I suppose.

Now if you get into what wood choice is the most rounded for this certain style, then you could close in on something.

A Vintage Humming Bird compared to A Martin Hd-28V is the same shape but not anywhere close to the same. They cost the same and have a lot of the same but they don't sound the same.

So are you wondering if you would buy a guitar what's best for you ?

I'll do my best at answering your question

I am saving my money to custom build a Breedlove acoustic made of Koa, for it's the body style and wood choice that will give me balance for my playing. Doesnt mean I won't keep my Flamenco guitar around for something to do ?!?!

Gibson 335. Not that I'll ever own one, but if I had a blank check from God, that's what I'd buy. Love that tone.

Try an Epi Sheraton. Pretty close but without the stigma of a copy guitar. They're cool... I love Casinos too, though not quite the same thing as a 335.

I tell you what I played recently that felt like home. The new Taylor solid body electric. I was producing an album and the guitarist works at Taylor. He brings the prototype over and...

...wow. Like a Les Paul but more comfortable and responsive and with a more tranparent and open high mid quality. If the production models are anything like this, try it. They're very nice

Ain't no single best guitar. At least not for me.

I like my J-Strat OK except for the crap Fender p/u's. I need to put some single coil replacements on it one of these days.

I love my Yamaha G-130A classical from the late 60s or early 70s. Not a 'fine' guitar, maybe, but it's very close to my heart. When I find myself adrift and not engaging with guitar I'll pick it up to get back in touch with myself.

I have a Norman (a Seagull company now) dreadnaught that I like except for the size -- I hate hoisting my right shoulder up over it for hours at a time. I'll often move it to classical position (left knee, neck up) when fingerpicking just to ease my posture.

I'd love to get a nice parlor or concert guitar for fingerpicking -- something with a narrower body and waist.

I have a Gibson ES 325 -- very similar to the 335 exept only one f-hole and mini-HB p/u's -- and it's a nice guitar but I've yet to warm up to it. It doesn't play nice with my Blues Jr amp, that's for sure. It's better with my Lexicon Sig 224 low power head. It was probably best with the Carvin Vintage 33 I sold a while back. Kind of regret that -- it was 3 times the amp that the Fender Bjr is -- but I liked the Bjr tone so much better with the Strat. (But the noise is a disgrace. Fender is really a crap company and I wish someone who actually cared about guitars would buy it. The current guys aren't quite as bad as the last guys but I wish they'd go buy their island in Dubai and sell Fender to someone who cares.)

Ah... one of my favorite and most played guitars is a little $50 3/4 size classical nameplated by Angelica (bought through Sam Ash -- I'm on my second one after busting the first one in half one too many times -- not the guitar's fault!)

Do you mean "Best" or the one you love the most?

I find that a person should have more than one guitar that you really like, even if it's just so you have a backup if you drop your main guitar.

I like guitars with fantastic fit and finish and workmanship, which tends to throw them into a prohibitive price range.

Weird huh? Sure glad I don't make my living at this.

Right now, and I stress the now as in ever evolving, I like my PRS Singlecut the best. Great fit and finish on the neck. It always feels good in my hands.

Check a Gadow out. Those are very nice guitars. Wish I would have kept it.

I've checked those out. I agree, very nice. We have a local dealer that picked up that line, surprisingly, since I live in the sticks. For anyone seeking they are worth the look.

I guess a better way to have phrased the question would've been: if you were stranded on a desert island and only had one guitar with you, which one would you want it to be? (Of course, an actual desert island probably wouldn't be able to accomodate electric guitars, but this is purely hypothetical.)

Me, I'm not a guitarist, so I have no idea. I suppose one that plays itself.:)

My favourite is my Godin LGX-SA (I have the blue one) gtrlgxsas.jpg

It's been rock solid for a couple years, though I recently had to open it up & retouch some of the soldering, it had some cold solder joints & a little bit of el cheapo-ness to the craftmanship of the wiring.

It has a fairly complex pile of electronics inside (for a guitar, anyway. This is the first time I saw ribbon cable used in a guitar). A lot of the complexity is due to the hex synth pickup, but there was a lot of wiring for the piezo pickups too. The humbuckers were pretty much a fairly 'stock' circuit, with 5 way switch, volume & 2 tone pots.

Since the company is in Canada, I don't want to have to send it off for repairs... Next time I take it apart, I'm going to take a couple days & draw schematics of the circuit boards.

But guitars are so individual and individually special that I'd feel lost without my other ones:

Strat w/ GK3 pickup

Ovation Custom Balladeer 12 string acoustic/elec.

Carvin Cobalt acoustic/elec.

Classical (gut string) acoustic

My ancient Kramer bass (all 40 lbs...)

My dulcimer (custom built by Everett Traylor)

Each has it's own place in what I do, and none are expendable....
