Oscar was always my favorite jazz pianist. I had the pleasure of seeing him,Ela Fitzgerald,Joe Pass and Nils Peterson (not sure of his name) at the Auditorium in Chicago about 25 years ago and it was inspiring.

 

I loved the way he use to grunt when he played, you could feel it coming from his soul.

FWIW, I got to meet him at his home in Toronto several years ago. He was totally gracious and cool, no attitude at all, and a great host. What I remember most was he smiled a lot when he talked :)

 

It's always a wonderful thing when you find out that someone you respected turns out to be someone you can like, too. He was a total gentleman.

 

But I must say...the loss of this kind of giant is cushioned somewhat by all the recorded works he left behind, just like Bob Moog lives on every time you adjust a synth envelope.
