While the history of witchcraft is strewn with people misusing knowledge of herbs and plants and more esoteric practice for selfish ends ('black magic' -- although the 'magic' was often chemical), Wicca is a modern -- and some would say contrived -- distillation and transmutation of old traditions that combines elements of the monotheistic Christian and Zoroastrian traditions with elements of traditional pantheism and nature worship.
