  • I'm having a multi-cultural immersion

I watching the Olympic opening ceremonies now and I also recently put up a new satellite dish to pick up the Galaxy satellite at 97 Degrees West which is filled with channels from at least 20 diverse nations and 20 different languages. (including USA and Canadian French)and......

I can see all of this from my favorite chair !! (but I don't want to get too comfortable here.)

You would have had a great time back in the days of 10' c/ku band satellite dishes. I know that I did. I remember installing a dish for a German couple in Minnesnowta during the 1994 Winter Olympics. I dropped the dish on the pole and let it rest on top of a snow bank when I went to lunch. When I came back they were sitting in the house watching a Winter Olympics feed from Lillehammer, Norway. The dish was "aimed" almost at the horizon and was picking up a satellite somewhere over the Atlantic that was being used to feed Olympic events to the networks in the US. Once the dish was properly aligned it was not possible to receive that satellite.

A few of the dishes that I installed over the years: http://www.pbase.com/rking401/satellite_installs&page=all

My old house and my old dish.

I'm picking up 200 radio channels and over 120 TV stations on 97 West. No this IS NOT Dishnet or DirectTV.

As a matter of fact, one of my fellow retirees, mentioned last Friday that he bought a house with a "GREAT BIG OLD SATELLITE DISH", that he is eager to get rid of.

The last time I had a multi-cultural immersion, a few women became mothers.

That's a very common situation. I have a new 10' dish that has been sitting in storage (in sections) since I moved to Florida in 1996. I just didn't have a proper place to install it here. I probably could have run it up on a long pole like I did at my Minnesnowta house, but I just didn't want to go through the effort again. I'll probably throw it away in the near future to make room for other things. I really did enjoy scanning the skys with the old dish in the days before the small dishes arrived. When I drove past the old house last summer the dish was still in place, with no small dish in site, so, it appears that it is still in use.

I'm really out of touch on this.

This listing seems to describe that 97.
                    http://www.galaxy-marketing.com/galaxy_25_@_97_0w.htm

other listings can be found a page up from that:
from somebody called Galaxy Marketing who sells satellite gear

What do you need for a receiver? How much longer are these satellites up?
Who uses these feeds? Cable headends?

The charts you are looking at are a copy of this site's work: http://www.lyngsat.com/ Lyngsat has been used by years for dealers to figure out what's where. It's a great resource. Many of the feeds up there are used by cable companies, especially the encrypted ones. The unencrypted ones can be viewed by anyone "looking" in that direction. Notice that the music channels, for the most part, are encrypted. Also, on the charts, the lower frequency channels require a c-band dish, one of those big things that I need to get rid of. I hear that today, on a few satellites, you can probably use a 5' c-band rather than the 10' dish that I had though.

As for what to get, you need a Free To Air (FTA) system. These guys are probably one of the bigger dealers in the US http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Order/Systems.htm . An FTA system is actually very reasonable, but, you won't get any of the channels that you are used to seeing from your cable or satellite company.

Now it is almost impossible to pick up PIRATED Dishnet or DirectTV, so many people are dumping their old FTA boxes. On Ebay you can pick up many for $25 to $40. My friend sold me a ViewSat Ultra AND Fortec Star, both together for only $60. I'm picking up 97 west with the Viewsat Ultra and a 36" dish.(picture below) I now have 2 C clamps securing the dish in place. It was given to me 5 years ago collecting dust in my garage.

My next project is to add another LNB to that dish so that I can also pick up 101 West (AMC4)

I get most of my advise from http://legalfreetoair.com

I'm using the Spitfire Elite LNB with a second on the way.

Thanks, Richard! that helps a lot. You probably need one of the newer HD boxes for the MPEG-4 stuff?

Well now that ION , ANGEL 1 AND NASA are no longer FREE on DishNet, many more will soon be joining the BUD (BIG UGLY DISH) FTA GANG ! After years being free channels, DishNet encripted those last 3 channels today.
