Members *BLEEP*
Audacity is good basic computer-based multi-track recording software that's been around for a while. Even though it's free, it's definitely quite usable for any non-professional home-based recording. Get it here... http://www.audacityteam.org/
Members zzzaaappp
Thanks Bleep. I looked at that, and read some reviews. It seems that it's not REALLY freebecause at some point you have to pay them a fee for something. I forget what it is for..

Members blue2blue
zzzaaappp -- I wonder if you're confusing the free, open source Audacity with the pay-for (but free-to-demo) software from Adobe called Audition, (Adobe Audition was called CoolEdit before Adobe bought it and renamed it, for some reason, to be so similar to the very well-liked, but not very slick Audacity, which had been around for about 4 years at that point. Like so many Adobe acquisitions, it's languished under them.) Anyhow, Audacity would be a good way to get your feet wet. Once you know your way around, you can shop for the specific features you think will be important to you. Members Tullsterx
Sonar Home Studio is about $100 and it's all I've ever used. Plus, there are 1000's of free VST effects and such.
Members drobster67
Reaper. It is not free, but you can try it out for 60 days for free (not a stripped down version either). If you like it, it's less than 100 dollars for a personal license. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. It comes with some really nice vst plug-ins, and like the above post...there are thousands more you can download. The software (at least the PC version, I can't comment on MAC) is stable and they update it quite regularly. The trick to a DAW is figuring out how to use it. I found the learning curve with Reaper was not too bad. There are plenty of "How To" videos on youtube. Just do a search on "Reaper DAW" and you'll find tons of info, demos, samples, etc.
