OK... taking over for Stickboy as he traverses around Greece with his lovely girlfriend. Let's give this a whirl again.

This month's songwriting challenge:

Animals or Insects

Write a song that in some way features an animal or insect. It can be blatantly about an animal/insect... or it could be symbolic or metaphoric. Let's not be picky.

July 31st deadline for an initial pass.

Examples include:

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Martha My Dear

Hungry Like the Wolf

Hound Dog

When Doves Cry

Crocodile Rock

The song I am working on for this I titled 'Abandoned', and it written as if a person has been left by someone, but really, its about an abandoned dog, from the dog's perspective. At any rate, it caused me to pick up the pen and guitar again so this is a good thing already.

Wow. I kinda forgot. I actually have a song that sorta features a critter.

Here's the lyrics:

When it's cold, I like it better inside

When it's hot, I'll probably be outside

I can adapt, to any circumstance

Be it a Bourgeois Ball or a June Bug dance

I'm a Chameleon

I change when I please

I'm a Chameleon

I change when I please

Incognito

Slithering on the ground

I can change colors

Be it black,red or brown

Then I'll just blend in

And if I'm in the trees

I can turn white or green

And just slip into the scene

I'm a Chameleon

I change when I please

I'm a Chameleon

I change when I please

I'm a Chameleon

I might just change on you

I'm a Chameleon

I like it this way too

I can fit in, anywhere I go

No one will know

Yeah I know, crappy production values, too much echo, out of control flanging, crappy drum machine.

It may suck but it's my suck...

Hi Alamo,

Not normally the kind of tune I might listen too, but creative in its own way!

The only thing I want to mention, although its not explicitly stated in the challenge, or even necessarily implied, is that the real benefit of challenges like this is to flex songwriting muscle. e.g. instead of pulling one from the catalog, write something new in response to the challenge. Even if it's just a song idea with one instrument and one vocal. Or maybe it's expansion on a prior idea.

Nothing wrong with pulling one from the catalog, but funner (and definitely more beneficial to those muscles) to create a new one if one has time to do so.

Just my thoughts.

Rick

Alamo, I wouldn't worry about it. Like Rick said, the main point is to write something new, but I think any contribution is better than none at all. Also, I kind of like that drum machine.

I got one coming. Mosquito Farm Blues

It was a Roland TR-505 I believe..And the machine wasn't a bad one at all really. I was really referring to my operation of it....I flew in the drums for the most part, relying on recording them rather than programming them. Thanks for the kindness though Sir....

Okay, here's one I posted a while back. I wrote it in the '90s...

He might like katydids and spiders.

He might like tangerines or plums.

Each night he leaves the comfort of his cave.

Better watch out, here he comes.

It might seem a propos to panic,

or to secure your windowpanes.

But he’s only interested in bugs and fruit,

not the stuff that’s running through your veins.

His crimes are human fabrications.

He's a lot like you and me.

He works real hard with no vacations.

He loves his friends and family.

Still, people reach for broomsticks

when into homes he'll chance to stray.

He's more afraid of you than you of him

so crack the door and let him fly away.

(interlude)

I sometimes wonder if he knows that

he’s such an object of distress.

He sure could use a new P.R. guy.

He’s been a victim of bad press.

Yet, at each of our encounters,

I split the scene in no time flat.

The most misunderstood of animals,

this kind and gentle creature called the bat.

The most misunderstood of animals.

I’d hate to be misunderstood like that.
