This is Ben Taylor, yes, Carly and James' son. Impossible to not compare him to Mom and especially Dad since his vocal quality is like a sanded-down and softened version of Dad's voice.

As a singer-songwriter, I hear so much in Ben's work that reminds me of my own singer-songwriting. Not as to style and sound, but as to the varying quality of the material and the execution. On this album at least, Ben is very good, but not quite "there" yet. His songs tend to meander occasionally, lose focus. He does not seem to have quite his parent's instinct for the succinct hookiness of great folk/pop.

The arrangements are clumsy at times, the playing and singing are sometimes pretty far out of the pocket. He's a study in what we all are to some extent - someone with a lot of potential, a few really good takes, a few big mistakes, but clearly still a work in progress, someone to watch. Which is pretty much where I hope I'm at....

Taken more on his own terms, which is only fair, he's extremely easy to listen to, has a thoughtful and relaxed charm, and a definite gift for lyrics that at times rises to brilliance.

This song is just fantastic....at his best on this one.

This one....the long melodic verses are wonderful, great lyrics. The bouncy contrasting sections...meh...

Someday Soon

This one has sister and Mom singing along on the great round that's at the end of a song co-written by his parents, Terra Nova (on the album JT). This one is ambitious, a good listen, but has less than desirable transitions here and there, and doesn't really build the intensity that seems to me to be intended. Great idea, needs some work.

I absolutely love listening to songwriters perform the songs they wrote.

Bob Seger made this song a hit but I love Rodney Crowell's version better.

Rodney Crowell - Shame on the Moon (1981)

Hmmmm. Since I was still working as a DJ in 1982, and the Bob Seger version was a hit that year, I'm damned if I can figure out why I've never heard it. But I distinctly remember hearing Crowell's version, over and over on one of my mix tapes...

In other words, great song!

Here's another one I liked from that LP and put on another mix tape...

"Stars on the Water."

Bob Seger was one of the co-writers (with Don Henley, Glenn Frey & J.D. Souther) on the Eagles hit, "Heartache Tonight."

I don't like the verses much, musically, but ya gotta love the chorus.

Noel Gallagher with all his classic charm had this to say to Rolling Stone when asked about Tidal

You've said in the past that you want people to own music instead of stream it. What's your take on Tidal?

[Long pause] I thought that the people on the stage might want to be a little bit aware that they don't look like Jay Z's minions. Madonna was pretty cool the way she cocked her leg up on that desk and signed the [declaration]. I think ultimately that the spiel they came out with, it was like, "Do these people think they're the {censored}in' Avengers? They're going to save the {censored}in' [world]." I was speaking to Chris [Martin] the day after, and I said, "Are you after a Nobel Peace Prize? Is that what you're after?" They were like, "We're going to {censored}in' save the music business." And I'm just sitting there, thinking [imitates smoking weed] you might want to write a decent chorus for a {censored}in' start. Never mind {censored}in' royalties and the "power of music." Write a tune. {censored}in' start with that.

So no more weekly thread?

OK this won't be everyone's cup of tea, and it's not exactly "songwriting," but these are the last things I heard which blew my mind a little. London-based producer SOPHIE, best played on speakers w/ bass and some separation:

Hard:

Lemonade:

When this song was out, it was a bit of an epiphany to me because there was a guy in our town who you'd see from time to time, just walking and walking and walking, all day long.

So that was one cool thing about the song. The other cool thing is the chordage...

[video=youtube;dKF8IzBmp74]

Oh, yeah, and this line:

"...who would want to listen to ya kissin' his existence good night?"
