These all have finished tunes written for them.

First up, an alt. country kind of song?

"The Lies of Love"

1

Your long list of failures is giving you the blues.

You’re running out of options till there’s nothing left to lose.

So you’ve holed up in some hotel room with a Minnesota blonde.

And you tell yourself you’re happy, boy, but you just can’t get beyond

Refrain

the lies of love, the lies of love,

you’ll always be a prisoner of

the second tries, the quick goodbyes, the lies of love.

2

She was two when you were twenty and she’s less than twenty now.

You know you must have met her somewhere, you just can’t remember how.

She’s a perfect illustration of this curse afflicting you

with no easy explanation why you’re so addicted to

(repeat refrain)

Bridge

And your tears fall like rain.

And you can’t explain

how everything you are and want to be is born and dies

within the secrecy and silence of her eyes.

3

Though on the bedpost while she’s sleeping you might carve another notch

she’ll be missing in the morning with your wallet and your watch.

You can’t face the shaving mirror so you hide behind a beard.

And it couldn’t be much clearer, you’ve created what you feared.

(repeat refrain)

Next, an attempt at a kind of Jonathan Richman meets Buddy Holly meets B. J. Thomas, hooky pop tune...

"Do You Really Want to Fall In Love With Him?"

1.

Do you really want to fall in love with him,

when you know he doesn’t care?

He’s just another careless millionaire.

It’s only money, girl.

Do you really want to go out on a limb

with another superficial suit?

His love is just a sugar substitute.

I’m sweet as honey, girl.

Bridge

But every time you look my way,

your eyes seem to say,

“Won’t you tell me, please, what’s wrong with me?”

Nothing I can see.

2.

Do you really want to spend those endless nights,

crying all alone

by your portable telephone,

when I could get a cab right over?

Do you really want to fight those senseless fights

when he’s got a heart of steel?

Can’t you see the way I feel?

I think I love you, girl.

Bridge

And every time I look your way,

your eyes seem to say,

“Won’t you tell me, please, what’s wrong with me?”

Nothing I can see.

Break

Oh, if I had the nerve

you’d have the love that you deserve.

I’d give it to you.

Now, darling, do you

understand what I’ve been trying to say?

Give it up now!

Chorus

Give it up now, give it up, baby,

he’s never gonna make you happy.

(repeat and fade)

And a very old country tune (from 1974?)

"I’m Free (Approximately)"

1.

Woke up this morning. I put on my socks,

grabbed a bag of Doritos, pulled a Pepsi from the ice-box.

Breakfast as usual, yeah it’s the same ol’ tune—

how lovely is a Monday morning on a Monday afternoon.

2.

Coulda stayed at home today but I went out of doors.

I walked downtown, looked in all the stores.

Bought myself a record and a brand new comb.

Then my feet got tired so I went home.

Chorus

’Cause I’m free. That’s me without you.

I do what I choose, babe, I don’t choose what I do.

Yes, I’m free: no schedule or plan.

I don’t need a woman, I’m a liberated man.

3.

Put on my record, played it over again.

Me and Merle Haggard till half past ten.

I sat in the dark and thought of things that we said,

then took off my socks and went to bed.

Chorus

’Cause I’m free. That’s me without you.

I do what I choose, babe, I don’t choose what I do.

Yes, I’m free: no schedule or plan.

I don’t need a woman, I’m a liberated man.

I don’t need a woman, I’m a liberated man.

That is a great line. And using it as a reoccurring tag is a good idea.

V2

Coulda stayed at home today but I went out of doors.

I walked downtown, looked in all the stores.

Bought myself a record and some brand new shoes

how lovely is a Monday morning on a Monday afternoon.

V3

Put on my record, played it over again.

Me and Merle Haggard till I don't know when

I sat listening to him sing his saddest tune

how lovely is a Monday morning on a Monday afternoon.

That would be cool with a chorus too. Refrain and chorus. ?

Anyway Lee, I read these late last night and could a melody in my head for all of them. Great stuff. Nice natural cadence and feel.

I agree that the Monday morning / Monday afternoon line is a goodun, but IMO 'The Lies of Love' stands out as the strongest song of the three.

It is a piece of astute personal / social observation and very well crafted. It has the strongest writing of the three.

If I was your producer, I'd be saying that it should go on your record.

Cool. Thanks!

I'll try to record all three and post them in the monthly what-dya-callit thread.

I like Lies of Love a lot - only off things for me are "Minnesota blonde" (so what, Minnesota doesn't tell us anything) and how she robs him at the end.

Not a fan of these multi-song posts, it's hard enough keeping track of single song threads. :)

Good point.
