Members Idunno
I don't know if this is a song I was attempting or just a rant. There was a day when songwriting could be a rant. I remember. Dylan, Seeger, Guthrie, Baez, their musical prodigies; where are they now? Where's Abbie Hoffman? I'm not talking political party sideline cheerleaders like Springsteen, et al. I'm talking about writers who put on the gloves with their words. Anyway, it's too long but there's a continuity I can't retain in abbreviated representation. Maybe I'll put it on my gravestone instead. Thanks. Once Upon A Nation Once upon a story toldOf a place one could be freeWhere books were yet to holdTales of its land and seaAnd on it shores, the story goesBy the edge of sea and sandWhispered calls from tidal flowsTold of freedom in this land The people heard the callAnd, leaving plow and tillThey fled from their oppressorsAnd all the social illThey fled from tax assessorsWho never got their fillThey fled from unfair judgementWhen bowing heads in prayerThey fled for love of lifeSomewhere freedom filled the air And on this land they builtThis new home of the freeAnd fought a war to rest itFrom the old world past the seaAnd win they did this war for lifeThis war to hold their landDeath was not an unjust priceFor freedom was at hand And then they came to ponderThis new land they had wonTo govern was but wonderThey never before had doneFor fools they’d known amendingIn governmental dressSows of surplus spendingWithout evil to confess So off they chose to righteousnessFrom that they’d never strayThey’d be champions for goodnessTheir prodigy would sayAnd by moral executionWith ethics tightly graspedThey wrote their constitutionForever would it last And the people saw the writingThese words borne of the heartWith all their lofty claimingIt gave them all a startFor how could such entitlementThough richly penned and soundYield the underlaymentOf a nation newly found But now those days are gone it seemsNew worlds can’t be foundWhere sons may go to find their dreamsWhere freedoms still aboundFor now such freedom has been lostThrough faulty sense of rightWhile wrong is served at any costBy those who’ve lost their light And thus through wars and those who diedThis nation has been freeFrom evil acts of those who’ve triedTo bring it to its kneesBut what bewilderment is thisForever should we raveTo let our government insistThis nation be its slave For all that was and in this lightDishonor do we doTo those who paid to win the fightTo keep this nation trueYet one by one we’ve seen them lostThese freedoms won by fireAnd as they leave so do the ghostsOf freedom’s stillborn sire
