Yes! Life is good! Music reminds me of that. Share what you think is great music... or at least in some small or great way has influenced you and ultimately your writing. Come ON! I know you're out there! Post it! What better way to say hello to bunch of freaks?!?! And speaking of freaks...

Life On Mars. It's a cool tune. But it's so... Bowie. David Bowie put such an identifiable stamp on his music at certain points that as wonderful as the tunes were, it was hard to separate the material from the man, persona, and performance. But hearing Life On Mars as sung by Jessica Lange doing her best Marlene Dietrich on American Horror Story's season premier Freak Show (YES!), as intentionally odd as the performance is, I can't help but hearing this song fresh. And... I think it's a great freaking song. As failing freak show proprietor, Lange secretly longs for the spotlight herself. But has her brass ring grab come way too late? Isn't it a saddening bore?

It's a god-awful small affair

To the girl with the mousy hair

But her mummy is yelling "No"

And her daddy has told her to go

But her friend is nowhere to be seen

Now she walks through her sunken dream

To the seat with the clearest view

And she's hooked to the silver screen

But the film is a saddening bore

For she's lived it ten times or more

She could spit in the eyes of fools

As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall

Oh man!

Look at those cavemen go

It's the freakiest show

Take a look at the Lawman

Beating up the wrong guy

Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know

He's in the best selling show

Is there life on Mars?

It's on America's tortured brow

That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow

Now the workers have struck for fame

'Cause Lennon's on sale again

See the mice in their million hordes

From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads

Rule Britannia is out of bounds

To my mother, my dog, and clowns

But the film is a saddening bore

'Cause I wrote it ten times or more

It's about to be writ again

As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall

Oh man!

Look at those cavemen go...

I think I never thought about how much influence I caught from these folks(ies) The Mamas and The Papas - they had lots of filler (actually mostly filler) on their albums, no question, but when they were good, they were etc etc etc.

This is about as full-on Sgt Pepper 60s as it gets, corny and hip and charming and naive and not-yet-destroyed by drugs and all the other disasters de jure.

skipping over Monday, Monday and California Dreamin' since everyone knows those, these are perhaps less known tracks. Worth listening to just for the arrangements alone:

I've been digging what Keith Jeffery of Atlas Genius is doing with his finely integrated guitar and vocal melody approach. Like a lot of "indie" acts except... Really good. ;) and dig the interplay with his brother on drums. Australia still seems to nurture real BANDS. Love it.

Oh... and that Tele with what look to be TV Jones pickups sounds fantastic.

One hit wonders, but I love the blast of old school N'Orleans rock'n'roll.

Wow! I haven't thought of these guys since this song was current. I saw them at one of the local punk clubs. Either San Diego's Zebra or Skeleton Club. They were from LA actually. And they were totally rockin'. Very cool spin Mr. Lee.

I have often discussed the virtues of the Wilson Brothers, Brian, Dennis & Carl, but I also have a fondness for the Wilson Sisters, Ann and Nancy.

Jeff Buckley - Lover You Should Have Come Over

So many great lines in this song. Hard to believe this album is now 20 years old.

Looking out the door i see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners

Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water

And maybe i'm too young to keep good love from going wrong

But tonight you're on my mind so you never know

When i'm broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it

Where are you tonight, child you know how much i need it

Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun

And much too blind to see the damage he's done

Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one

So i'll wait for you... and i'll burn

Will I ever see your sweet return

Oh will I ever learn

Oh lover, you should've come over

'Cause it's not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in

Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him

My body turns and yearns for a sleep that will never come

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder

It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her

It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter

It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Well maybe i'm just too young

To keep good love from going wrong

Oh... lover, you should've come over

'Cause it's not too late

Well I feel too young to hold on

And i'm much too old to break free and run

Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage i've done

Sweet lover, you should've come over

Oh, love well i'm waiting for you

Lover, you should've come over

'Cause it's not too late

Dark lounge jazz out this week:
