Final Edit 8-21-14

I just can't stop tweaking it.. LOL

Life's Road Traveled 8-21-14

(V)

You’re rollin’ down life’s highway

Passing signs, that go unread

Barricades are your final warning

Flashin' light says, “Detour Ahead”

(V2)

Cool moon lit sky, rough country

Comin' up, to a fork in the road

Choices are between pavement or gravel?

What lies ahead, you don't really know

(chorus)

Even the paths of least resistance

Are full of steep grades and steady declines

That's just the way life's road travels

Keep followin' the signs and you'll be fine

(3)

You see the lights out in the distance

That's where you wanna be, not so far away

If you choose not to take the blacktop

That unpaved road will lead you astray

(chorus)

Even the paths of least resistance

Are full of steep grades and steady declines

That's just the way life's road travels

Keep followin' the signs and you'll be fine

(bridge)

Outta gear and grinding the clutch

Plus drivin' blind won't help you much

(chorus)

Even the paths of least resistance

Are full of steep grades and steady declines

That's just the way life's road travels

Keep followin' the signs and you'll be fine

Remember follow the signs and you'll be fine

Been playing around with another lyric.

The Road Life Travels

(V)

You’re rollin’ down life’s highway

Ignored signs, passed by unread

Barricades and a final warning

Flashing light says, “Detour Ahead”

(V2)

Dim moon lit sky, rough country

Headin’ south, fuels gettin' low

Fork in the road, pavement or gravel

What lies ahead, your choice will know

(chorus)

That’s the road your life travels

You're in control or you're drivin' blind

You can choose the path of least resistance

Just stay on the road the whole time

That’s the road your life travels

(V3)

You see those bright lights in the distance

So close to touch, yet so far away

Will it be, blacktop or gravel?

Wrong choice leads you astray

(chorus)

That’s the road your life travels

You're in control or you're drivin' blind

You can choose the path of least resistance

Just stay on the road the whole time

That’s the road your life travels

(bridge)

If wrong turns leave you feeling lost or stranded

Keep it in gear, stay off the clutch

Don't take your life for granted

(chorus)

That’s the road your life travels

You're in control or you're drivin' blind

You can choose the path of least resistance

Just stay on the road the whole time

That’s the road your life travels

Yeah that's the road your life travels

Travelin’ Life’s Road

(V)

You’re rollin’ down life’s highway

Flyin’ by road signs that go unread

Around a curve, final warning

Flashing lights sayin’, “Detour Ahead”

(V2)

Dim moon lit road, through rough country

Headin’ south and takin’ it slow

Pavement ends, turns into gravel

What lies ahead, Only your choices know

(chorus)

That’s the way life’s road travels

It’s a steep grade with some steady declines

We search for a path of least resistance

But follow the road that life has in mind

(V3)

You see those bright lights in the distance

But they keep getting further away

With every exit you take to reach them

Becomes a dead end to your day

(chorus)

That’s the way life’s road travels

It’s a steep grade with some steady declines

We search for a path of least resistance

But follow the road that life has in mind

(bridge)

While headin’ for your destination

If you start to feel stranded and lost

Get your mind into gear and pop that clutch

Don't give up your journey at any cost

(chorus)

That’s the way life’s road travels

It’s a steep grade or a steady decline

You'll find the path of least resistance

So follow the road

Yeah keep followin' lifes road

Follow the road life has in mind

Nicely done!!

+1, though I'm not sure about "that's the way life's road travels..." I generally get itchy and restless whenever I hear "life" mentioned in a song lyric (depending on how it's used of course).

Of course I do like "Give Me the Simple Life."

Hmmm. Does it read better, "That's the road your life travels"?

I edited the original. Flows better when I'm actually able to sing it out loud. (Unable to at work) :)

I like a road song and this appears to be a good one.

I do think you have a thematic inconsistency though. In V1 it says "detour ahead" which implies the driver isn't in control of their destination. This is consistent with the chorus, "follow the road life has in mind." In V2 it says "your choice will know." This implies the driver is in control of where they're going. I suppose the argument could be made the choice is in whether or not to follow the detour sign, but for this type of thing I think it would be more effective to keep it more black and white.

A rewrite for me would look something like this.

Travelin’ Life’s Road

(V)

You’re rollin’ down the highway

Flyin’ by road signs that go unread

Around a curve, final warning

Flashing lights, “Road Closed Ahead”

(V2)

Dim moon lit road, through rough country

Headin’ south and takin’ it slow

Pavement ends, turns into gravel

What lies ahead, you can't really know

(chorus)

That’s life living on the road

It’s a steep grade with some steady declines

We search for a path of least resistance

and follow the orange detour signs

(V3)

You see those bright lights in the distance

But they keep getting further away

With every exit you take to reach them

Becomes a dead end to your day

(chorus)

That’s life living on the road

It’s a steep grade with some steady declines

We search for a path of least resistance

But follow the road that life has in mind

(bridge)

While headin’ for your destination

If you start to feel stranded and lost

Get your mind into gear and pop that clutch

Don't give up your journey at any cost

(chorus)

That’s life living on the road

It’s a steep grade or a steady decline

You'll find the path of least resistance

So follow the road the orange detour signs

Yeah keep followin' road

Follow the road life has in mind

Hope this helps

I do like your changes to the old lyric...the new edited lyric though explains better and fixes the inconsistency you found.
