Good Intent - should I progress

Just noodled around with this last night... very raw.

I don't know what it's about yet... the lyrics are temporary I suppose. Is the melody too familiar? I'm picturing a stark beginning... maybe not a proper chorus... but the song keeps building to a lush ending.

Not sure yet... really, it's just an hour of noodling late last night. Progress? Scrap?

We could battle it out

With such good intent

We could put up a wall

And hide behind it

We could make up a scene

And act out the parts

Play them all...

We could write a new page

And use fancy words

We could write a new tune

And sell it to the first one who is there

Who promised the world our downfall

Yeah! It does have a little of Bread's "If" in it. But not really... you don't need to change any of the melody, it just has a tinge of it somewhere. So what's it mean?

To me... it means, we could do all those things we're supposed to do. We could do all the things people feel we should, but... what do you want to do? What do I want to do. We've got a problem, how do we want to deal with it and screw everybody else. This is on us.

I'm just giving you the first thing that it meant to me since you said you weren't sure what it was about yet. That sort of owning up to my own feeling as I went through the initial stages of my divorce (we reconciled), that soul searching was a life changing process. To decide for myself and to not let the drift of others ideas and intent guide me. But to stop and and say, "What is it that I... ME... what do I want to do.

That may not be what it's about for you though. :)

Yeah... I was thinking I could go through all of these "We could" scenarios (maybe that's the name of the song... We could...), then resolve it at the end with a Nah, let's just do what we want kind of thing.

But the real question is... who is the "we"?

You could easily make this about lovers. Build tension the whole song

We could battle it out

With such good intent

We could each put up a wall

And hide behind it

We could follow the script

And act out our parts

Play them all...

Then the release would be when it switches to "or we could make love/screw/however you want your characters to address coitus." Instead of the release part being an "or" you could even have be "I don't care as long as we end up..."

Given this scenario, I'm not as much a fan of the second verse.

I like what you've done with the verse. Yeah, this may simply be a love song.

We could let it escalate

Turn into a siege

Stay secure behind our walls

Might even make it a few weeks

We could follow the script

and act out our parts

Play them all...

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Give it a chance!

Incidentally... anyone know how to sync the Boom Drum Machine plug-in to a track? If I wanted to get it to start when I hit record? I'm terrible with this kind of thing.

Gosh, I've done it but I had to search a bit. It's not obvious. Here's what I grabbed just now off the AVID forum but... So as I recall, you trigger by playing midi keys. That will trigger a sequence. Around middle C.

There is pretty good docs in the Pro Tools plug in manual I think it is...

Vocals are a bit rough... I have a cough and am just not nailing them yet.

We could break for the shore

When weather is rough

We could float through our lives

never to know what its like to have loved

Or to have fallen apart

We could settle right down

Build up our home

We'd have each other's backs

When they're up to the wall

We could hold our heads up

At the end of it all

We're all right

We could break for the shore

When weather is rough

We can control our lives

Change our direction and do what we like

Just cause we've fallen in love

Definitely more Floyd influenced now. Sounds a little like "Us and Them" at the open. The "ooh" parts also make me think of them, but not a particular song. They are incredible, BTW. I'm personally hoping that you take their lead and launch into one of the solos that LK mentions in your sig. That song is just dying to explode, IMO.

I don't know how attached you are to the stuff you are laying down now, but the snare doesn't sit right. Too tinny and hollow.

Oh, the vocals are better than you indicate, and better than what you posted yesterday. A lot of it sounds like it is good enough to keep.

Hmmm... an organ solo you're thinking? Not tied to the snare at all actually... I wasn't even going to have percussion, but was trying something a little different... percussive ambience.

No, a rip roaring guitar solo with notes that tear through your soul.

It's terrific.

I love the nod to Brian Wilson in the "ooohs."

There are a couple of lines that stick out b/c of a clunkiness to the rhythms.

"We can hide behind it" and "we can control our lives."

But other than that, I like where it's going. And I love the tune and the overall vibe.
