The cymbal bell work, the snare sound*, the vibes, the hi-hat work at 0:31 (epic) and of course the tympani solos. Then the outro where they bring it all together.

 

This song was later used as the theme song for Celebrity Bowling in the early 70s.

 

* What's this technique called, where you hold the left-hand stick at a 45 degree angle w/the tip against the head and hit that stick with your right-hand stick...not a cross stick...

I call those stickshots. Buddy (never met the guy) used 'em all the time.

 

The timpani sound pushed. It's a concession to the slow attack they produce but it makes me uncomfortable. The 60s is full of that type of antsy drumming. These days drummers try for a consistent groove and fluctuations in time are smoother if mostly undetectable.
