  • Today's Question: Do you prefer to wear anything specific on your feet when you play drums?

Personally, I just wear my normal sneakers. I have never been able to get comfortable playing barefoot.

+1...Lately it's been sneakers, although I have a pair of dress loafers that I used for over 14 years just for playing.

I used to wear Jazz Dance shoes, but several years ago, Thomas Lang turned me on to Puma Speed Cats, and I've been using them ever since.

Not really. Sometime barefoot, sometimes socks, sometimes tennis shoes. Really just whatever I have on. I've even played in Cowboy boots before! Just doesn't seem to matter much to me.

                  • For several years in my late late teens and very early 20's, it HAD to be cheap slip-on kung-fu shoes like these:

I convinced myself that the sole was so thin, they were better for my playing.

Then it HAD to be Chuck Taylors, again because of a thin sole, and relatively light shoe overall.

Then I gave that nonsense up.

Nowadays, I am almost always going to be wearing a pair of Vans of some sort (not the slip-on checkerboard variety, but the Old Skool or other skate shoes) when getting into gear load-in, etc., so that's what I typically have on to play as well.

                    • Come to think of it, early on I had to play barefoot or in socks. Now it's just the opposite...I have a hard time playing barefoot or in socks.

                      Hmmmm...... strange.

Good playing can hide a crappy drumset, but even the best drumset can't hide crappy playing.

                      • Let me add that basically, I can play in any shoes, but given the choice between playing while wearing boots or any kind of clunky or stiff-soled shoes, I'll opt for socks only, as much as I dislike doing so due to slippage (I prefer tread that will be somewhat tacky on bass & hihat footboards)...

BUT...I absolutely won't play with shoes that are really wide/square at the toe, since I'm also using my left/hihat foot to control patch changes on my DTX-12 Multi and advance/start/stop tracks for my primary band, and a really wide toed shoe won't allow me to hit just one button on the footswitches I'm using.

                        • Sperry Topsiders have been my favorite daily shoes for almost two years, they work well. Very low profile with a gummy grip like most skate shoes have. The gigs where I'm wearing suits it's dress shoes. Socks are fine but I don't feel comfortable totally bare.
