I’m going to have to go with The Godfather of Soul, the hardest working man in show biz, the one and only Mr. James Brown.

First off, I have to jab at this. If I was playing with a solo artist it wouldn't be a solo any more. Okay done.

To narrow it down to one is pretty hard so here's a partial list:

      Eric Bibb

      Charlie Musselwhite

      Boz Scaggs

      James Taylor

      Jack Johnson

      maybe even Steve Miller

James Brown might be fun, but he was such an ass hole I don't know if I could do that at this stage of my life.

Jack White would be on that list.

      no particular order

Ah, my drummer buddies and I hypothesize these questions all the time.

I think I'm going with Harry Connick, Jr. as long as it's in the She and Star Turtle vein. Awesome New Orleans funk with some variety.

I'm also inclined to say Dave Matthews for reasons I can't comprehend. I just feel like the dynamic shift and focus on accents in music would make him a cool cat to jam with if he was doing more solo stuff.

Actually, as crazy as it may sound, I think I'd go with something a little more current who may be close to the Godfather...Bruno Mars

then again I might say either Paul McCartney, Edgar Winter, or even though he's somewhat dickish, Sting

I finally made it into the Flaming Pedals of Doom. That was the longest and toughest audition I ever had to endure!
Yep...Still the Director of the Geezer Guild for 2013...and counting

I was asked this for a rock website online interview about 8 years ago. The answer hasn't changed. It was...and is still ... Peter Gabriel.

No only is his solo stuff fantastic (Shock the Monkey excluded), it is VERY percussive influenced and only gets more so ever year.

Good playing can hide a crappy drumset, but even the best drumset can't hide crappy playing.

Bowie, really?! That's one I wouldn't have thought of. Interesting.

Massive fan. My absolute favorite artist bar none. I've met A LOT of big name performers, but Bowie is the one guy that I'd absolutely lose my faculties around for sure (I didn't do so great one-on-one with Pete Townshend for all of 15 seconds, either, and I hold him/The Who in nearly the same regard as Bowie...but Bowie absolutely trumps for me).

I've seen him on every tour since '87, including a couple multi-nights...probably 9 times to date, I'd guess, including an amazing front-row/dead-center show on the Sound and Vision tour.

Beyond a massive genre and era-spanning catalog (I mean realistically, we're talking late-late 60's through early 2000's of output he'd likely play in concert), I think of the players he's had in his touring bands/on albums, and how much early shedding/learning I did to those recordings, etc. when I first started playing kit, 'learning' how to play along-side drummers like Ansley Dunbar, Tony Thompson, Omar Hakim, Hunt Sales (Tin Machine albums and Iggy Pop recordings Bowie played on/produced).

                        Yeah, absolutely.

My Bad. On this thread, beside Jimi, it's James Brown. I got myself confused because somewhere else I was discussing Jon Lord of Deep Purple and Bob Babbitt of the Funk Bros. both passing today.

I totally get what you're saying but in most cases such as that, you're simply being looked upon as a member of the "back up band" for said solo artist. Whether you play drums for Peter Gabriel or Justin Bieber, people are buying Peter Gabriel and Justin Bieber tickets, not Peter Gabriel or Justin Bieber featuring so and so tickets. Sad but true.

                              .

                              Jeff Beck or Steve Morse.

Yeah, I know Morse has been playing with DP for a while, but I know him mostly through his solo stuff and work with the Dregs.
