  • Cuba's EDM Scene? Really?!?

    Interesting...from the newswire:

    C
uba might not exactly be a “creative entrepreneur” but that hasn’t stopped some ambitious Cubans from launching a campaign aimed at bringing an EDM festival to Cuba in 2016. Describing itself a “non-profit festival connecting Afro-Cuban Folkloric music with the pioneers of the International Electronic music community”, the MANANA Festival has raised almost £13,000 on Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter out of its £40,000 goal so far. Scheduled to take place May 4-6, 2016 provided it raises enough capital, the festival itself has already been approved by the Cuban government and a select few artists from both Cuba and abroad have already signed on to the project. In addition to festival usuals, like music of course, MANANA will also be working with artists and technology partners to deliver a program of music workshops, seminars and talks that will run over the three days. International tickets will also be capped at 500 so if you’re down for the cause and ready for a quick trip to the Caribbean you better grab those as soon as you can.

An "International Electronic music community" juxtaposed to traditional "Afro-Cuban Folkloric music". Now, we're not just going to be satisfied with dial-spinning, slider-pushing in an original attempt at creativity. No sir. We're gonna appropriate (with no intended insult, of course) the hallowed past and obliviously morph it with digital sterility. No respect but nor worry; this is music with the headgear of creative license spun up to eleven. Yep, the mind's image of getting them all in one place at the same time to "have a little fun" (Sid, Toy Story) comes to mind.

The concept of music drawing inspiration from previous forms of music has never been attempted before in the history of the planet, so I can understand why you find this so disturbing.

Seriously, did it occur to you that being influenced by other forms of music will broaden the scope of electronic music? It's already happened, as more traditional instruments are being integrated with electronics. You can choose to ignore that because it doesn't fit your narrative that all people involved in dance music are talentless hacks who just push buttons, but it's the reality. EDM is growing specifically because it's not afraid to try new things and evolve.

Agreed, fun is evil. People should not have fun.
