Members rpsands
Why're you switching to flats? If what you're after is longevity and gentleness on your fingers, try Elixirs. Otherwise, I am pretty happy with the set of D'addario flats I use on my spare bass.
Members G-Bass-Austin
I am looking for a nice mellow smoothed out tone. I think the flats will accomplish that on my P Bass
Members Teleken
Tapewounds belong on my new fretless, no? Interested in Forumite collective opinion. It'll be here Friday, which means I really want to hunt down strings tomorrow and get 'em ordered if I need to.

Members Mudbass
Just had an idea for a new product...flatter than hell wounds. Somebody go lay a set of strings on the RR tracks and lemmie know how it turns out.
Members allan grossman
I heart D'Addario Chromes. Almost as bright as a roundwound

Members Smokinfiddler
Best Flatwounds for the buck is D'addario on the fretted bass IMHOAnd Fender Tapewounds on the Fretless there is definately more expensive but I dont see how they could be any better and I wouldnt be suprised that most of these strings were made by the same manufacturer and packaged under different brand names. Members G-Bass-Austin
Some one In Austin here recommended Thomastik. The reason I started this thread is because they seem really expensive. I was wondering if they are worth the price. Have any of you done any testing? Members someotherguy
I have Fender steel flats on my Ibanez P (fretted). I got them because they were in stock and on sale 2 for $30 at GC. Otherwise, I was going to try Chromes. I like the smooth mellow deep sound, but I miss the greater sustain of rounds. The Fenders lost their initial brightness after a couple months. I could go for a bit more brightness and low mids.

Members Thumper
I've had tapewounds on a fretless 4001 and fretless Hohner hollowbody in the past. They sounded great. Right now I've got webstrings flats on the '62 Jazz reissue and fretless AE P-bass. I love 'em.
Members JCampbell72
I just put a set of Rotosound Jazz Bass 77's on my 50's P-Bass and they sound fairly bright. I don't have a lot of experience with flatwounds, so rounds are my only point of reference. Although I do like the way my P-Bass sounds with them, I would like to know how D'addario Chromes compare to them.

Members Detox
So far I've tried Pyramids, Elixirs, Fender Chromes, and Sadowskys. I like the Elixirs best, followed by the Fenders. *Oops, I meant Fender Stainless, not chrome.*

Members y-o-y
I like the Rotosounds I have on my fretless cuz they are super stiff and relatively bright. I think they are rotosound 77's, but I'm not sure.
Members Manbearpig2
The TI flat wounds are a very low tension string. They're easy to play, relatively bright, and easier on the neck of your bass. I also like the old Fender flats, but they are just the opposite of what the TIs are. They're high tension, and when they get broken in nicely give a big fat bassy thud. I also have a set of flats that I acquired somewhere that have a tan wrap on them. Anyone familiar with the brand? Members Perfessor
Rotosound jazz flats. Smooth. Buttery. Did I mention smooth? And they last for years..........
