Organic Custom Drums Delivers Last Dual Floating Shell Snare Drum; Completes Transition to Modular Floating Shell Design

Organic Custom Drums, the leading designer and builder of cutting-edge, Modular Floating Shell^TMdrums, recently delivered the company’s last Dual Floating Shell (DFS) designed snare drum.

The final DFS snare drum, custom built for Organic Custom Drums’ customer Doc D’Errico of Southborough, MA, features single-ply, steam-bent Zebra Wood shells, 24 kt gold hardware (including 2.3mm triple flanged hoops, Trick GS007 throwoff, and custom machined lug assemblies), and a unique custom bevel/channeled center ring and lug design, made exclusively for this drum.

“We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to manufacture this drum,” said Rich Eisner, Organic Custom Drums president. “In working with Doc on his drum design, we made some design enhancements based on his feedback that truly made this a one-of-a-kind drum and raised the bar in terms of fit & finish. It is only fitting that this turned out to be the final DFS designed drum manufactured by Organic Custom Drums, and marks an exciting transition for our company.”

The delivery of the final DFS snare drum marks the completion of Organic’s transition to the re-engineered, exclusive Modular Floating Shell ^TM (MFS) design, which incorporates several enhancements to the proven DFS design. “Based on feedback from our customers, we took a close look at everything from lug assemblies to the way our Tone Ring interacts with the drum shells and spent six months in a complete re-design phase. The end result is our Modular Floating Shell design, which continues the DFS concept of enabling drummers to quickly and cost-effectively swap drum shells to customize their sound for different playing situations, but incorporates modifications such as new lug assemblies, a segmented drum shell design, and new bearing edge options,” said Eisner.

In addition to the Zebra Wood snare drum, Doc also took delivery of a custom Rosewood snare drum, which was originally owned by Sean Paddock, drummer for Kenny Chesney’s band. The drum was played live at the 2010 CMA Awards on the duet, “I’m Alive,” performed by Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews.

OverSize Series drums feature special reinforced lug assemblies manufactured from CNC machined hardened steel and aluminum components, extra-thick segmented mahogany and brass drum shells, special roundover top / 45 degree bottom bearing edges to maximize body and resonance, PureSound Custom 20 strand snare wires, and extra wide and deep snare beds for optimum snare response and articulation.

Latest design innovation features a fixed bottom shell paired with a floating top shell.

Organic Custom Drums announces a new design for their cutting-edge floating-shell snare drums. While Organic's new approach still utilizes their custom Center Ring, to which all hardware is attached, the bottom shell is now part of the Center Ring, as opposed to being a separate floating shell. The drum's top shell continues to be floating and interchangeable for a wide range of sound possibilities.

Artie Eaton, Organic Custom Drums' Director of Business Relations says, "Our new drum design is based on the fact that the majority of drummers using our drums are only swapping out the top shell to modify their sound palette. Additionally, making the Center Ring and the bottom shell one piece enables the Center Ring to add more depth and body to the drum's overall sound, since there is better energy transfer between the bottom shell and Center Ring."

The new Floating/Fixed Shell drums will be available in June 2010 and will feature maple and birch bottom shells in 6-, 8-, and 10-ply configurations. Single ply steam-bent Center Rings and bottom shells will be available as a custom option. Options for top shells continue to include maple, birch, mahogany, cherry, and oak ply shells, a wide variety of metal shells including brass, aluminum, nickel silver, and steel as well as single-ply steam bent exotic and domestic wood shells.

Organic Custom Drums to Debut New Snare Drums at the Southern Drum Show and Snare Drum Olympics

Organic Custom Drums will introduce several new snare drum designs at the Southern Drum Show, which takes place in Nashville, TN, Saturday July 18 and Sunday July 19, 2009. Among the snare drums being displayed at the show will be the all-new "Zebra" drum, which features single-ply, steam-bent Zebrano wood shells with 45 degree bearing edges, and a center ring hand crafted from maple with an outer ply of Zebrano wood. The new hybrid models feature a 1/8 inch thick aluminum top shell paired with either a maple or birch bottom shell in 8 or 10-ply configurations. Organic Custom Drums announces new hand-made snare drums featuring a unique patent pending floating design incorporating two separate shells joined by a central ring. All of the hardware is mounted to the central ring to alleviate any stresses that would otherwise be placed on the shells. This design enables the use of different shell materials for a wide variety of sound options.

While "free floating" designs have been done in the past, the use of two distinct shells is a fresh approach that offers almost limitless opportunities to customize a drum in terms of both look and sound. Rich Eisner, owner of Organic Custom Drums adds, "Using two separate shells in the drum's design gives drummers exciting new ways to fine tune their particular sound to meet any playing style. New options now exist to mix and match types of wood, shell thickness, and sizes.
