New products on tap for Finale music notation business

Minneapolis – March 2, 2012 – MakeMusic, Inc. (NASDAQ: MMUS), world leaders in music technology, today  announced upcoming releases of its flagship solutions of Finale  notation software.

“Beginning with the January announcement of our  first Finale iPad app release, we broke from past practices of waiting  to announce Finale releases until launch. We believe our worldwide  customers, channel partners and shareholders all benefit from open  communication of our launch plans as they are established,” said Karen  van Lith, MakeMusic CEO.

In concert with the company’s commitment  to communicate launch plans, MakeMusic is announcing the release of  several new Finale notation products through the remainder of 2012:

Finale SongWriter – Available on March 8, Finale SongWriter 2012 can be downloaded at www.finalemusic.com for $49.95. SongWriter contains many expanded features beyond what is  available in the free Finale NotePad, such as auto-harmonization,  real-time music entry, expanded page layout controls and .MP3 export.  Finale SongWriter is a perfect starting notation program for students  and songwriters.

Finale iPad viewer – Arriving in  May, the Finale iPad viewer is a free app that liberates musicians from  carrying and managing printed music, making it easy to have thousands of  pieces of music accessible at rehearsals and gigs. Unlike the printed  page, the Finale viewer app has playback capability to facilitate  learning and selection of new titles. Additionally, users can quickly  print scores to any AirPrint printer. Music for the iPad app can be  created using the Finale family of notation software.

Finale 2012b – Arriving in June, this release will be free to all owners of Finale  2012. Broader in scope than past updates, Finale 2012b will include  further improvements to features added in 2012, address top customer  requests and provide new features to help users create digital sheet  music.

“We are excited about the rapid pace of advancement in our  Finale software development, and are committed to continually deliver a  superior solution for musicians, whatever their need and preferred  device may be,” said van Lith. “We share our customers’ devotion to  music, which is evident in everything we deliver.”

MakeMusic, Inc. today announced that SmartMusic®, the music learning software for band, orchestra and voice, now includes nearly two dozen new jazz ensemble titles from Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band including "Hunting Wabbits," "The Jazz Police," and "Swingin' for the Fences." Music is provided on-screen and actual recordings of the Big Phat Band are featured in the audio accompaniments. In addition, each SmartMusic title will include a link to a video greeting from Gordon Goodwin and acclaimed trumpeter Wayne Bergeron, providing both general and specific comments on each Big Phat Band chart. Gordon Goodwin is an Emmy- and Grammy-award winning musician, composer, arranger, and bandleader. Gordon leads the Big Phat Band, an 18-piece jazz ensemble, which exclusively plays his arrangements and/or compositions, and records for the immergent record label. Despite its traditional big band instrumentation, the Big Phat Band produces a very contemporary sound with a strong emphasis on demonstrating the technical virtuosity of its membership, which includes many of the top instrumentalists of the Los Angeles studio scene. "Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band represent wonderful partners for SmartMusic," stated MakeMusic CEO Ron Raup. "Their music and recordings provide incredible inspiration to jazz musicians today, and when combined with SmartMusic they offer an incredible opportunity to learn from some of the world's top jazz performers. This combination allows jazz hobbyists, students and educators to set the bar high and exceed expectations." "immergent is pleased to partner with Gordon Goodwin, the Big Phat Band and MakeMusic on this important endeavor," offered immergent CEO John Trickett. "I began my career in music playing trombone at the age of thirteen because my school had a music program. It is one of my strongest passions to support educational programs that provide the same opportunities that were afforded to me. The technology and systems of SmartMusic transcend anything that has been available in the past. Finally there are tools available that can take a chart and put personal practice into the context of performance." "I've not met a single person who wasn't blown away by SmartMusic," added Gordon Goodwin. "Students, professionals, educators, and even lay people are greatly impressed by this amazing innovation. In these tough times for music education and for our musical culture in general, SmartMusic has come along in the nick of time!"

MakeMusic, Inc. announced today that Finale 2010 is now shipping. The flagship of the world's best-selling family of music notation software — and the world standard for more than 20 years — Finale 2010 offers a broad range of enhancements that reduce the distance between inspiration and perfection on the printed page. From percussion notation and chord entry to rehearsal marks and measure numbering, dozens of everyday tasks have been automated and simplified, saving music professionals and educators time and money, and ensuring that the upgrade quickly pays for itself. Highlights of these changes include:
  • The unparalleled power and flexibility of Finale's percussion notation is now incredibly simple to use.
  • The creation and sequencing of rehearsal marks has been automated.
  • Chord entry is greatly simplified — even when attaching chords to empty measures — and more efficient, requiring far fewer keystrokes.
In addition to ease-of-use and productivity enhancements, Finale 2010 now includes more than 350 sounds from the makers of Garritan Personal Orchestra. This provides a robust library rather than simply a sparse introduction to premium sounds found in other software. Among the dozens of additions to 2010 are new organ, guitar, bass, handbell, synthesizer and brush kit drum set sounds. Finale 2010 also adds support for VST/AU effects as well as instrument plug-ins, so those wishing to expand upon Finale's prestigious built-in sound capabilities will have no limitations. Music educators will welcome the addition of more than 350 worksheets. Designed for K-12 students of general music, theory, band, orchestra and choir, these printable worksheets help teach basic elements of music and are easily edited and customized. Additional features include the elegant new Broadway Copyist handwritten music notation font, scanning improvements, expanded graphic import/export support, additions to linked parts and much more. "The best tools are designed by the people who use them," stated Ron Raup, MakeMusic's CEO. "The varied improvements in Finale 2010 reflect the work of the musicians of MakeMusic and their ongoing communication with other Finale users. More than 80% of MakeMusic employees are musicians, participating in nearly 2000 performances each year. We're thinking, talking, living and breathing music — and interacting with other Finale users — every day. This close interaction, whether it occurs at the office, tradeshow, studio, school, place of worship or performance hall, informs every decision we make. We're confident that our customers will find the changes in Finale 2010 will contribute to improved workflow while maintaining the robust power customers expect." MakeMusic, Inc. announced today the release of Finale NotePad 2009 and the introduction of the Finale Reader. At $9.95 Finale NotePad represents the industry's most affordable introduction to music notation software, while the free Finale Reader lets anyone open, view, print and play any Finale file.

Finale NotePad users can enter notes with their mouse or via step-time entry using any MIDI keyboard. NotePad can also open MIDI files as well as any Finale file. Its Setup Wizard makes it easy to create orchestrations of up to 8 staves and create more specialized notation like guitar or bass tablature. Music plays back with the nuance of Human Playback and can be heard via the +128 included sounds or through an external MIDI device. Features new to 2009 include an all-new Expression Tool and the ability to import/export MusicXML files.

The Finale Reader is a free download that lets anyone open, view, print and play any Finale file. In addition it will be able to open MusicXML files as well.

"When it was first released in 2000, the initial idea behind NotePad was that it would work like an "Adobe Reader" for music notation, letting anyone open, play and print any Finale file," stated Ron Raup, MakeMusic's co-CEO. "Since then more than 4 million educators, students and other musicians have downloaded and made excellent use of Finale NotePad. In the intervening years, and particularly in the 2009 version, NotePad's feature set has been greatly expanded. With the 2009 release we will begin charging $9.95 for NotePad, while simultaneously releasing the free-of-charge Finale Reader. We believe this combination represents an excellent balance between free reader software and low-cost notation creation software."

MakeMusic, Inc. announced today the release of Finale NotePad® 2008, the latest version of the popular freeware for Macintosh and Windows computers. The latest version includes support for the Windows Vista operating system, compatibility with files made with Finale 2008 and a host of new features.

Most notable of the new features is the ability to import and export MIDI files. In addition notes can be entered in step time from a MIDI keyboard or other MIDI device, and NotePad can now play back via any external MIDI device. Other enhancements include an improved selection tool, a streamlined user interface, an expanded Setup Wizard and a new documentation system.

The software is especially popular with educators, allowing them to create assignments in Finale and share these creations with their students via NotePad. Like Finale, NotePad includes more than 128 professional-grade sounds from the acclaimed SmartMusic® learning software—these sounds ensure that playback is consistent between users of NotePad and Finale.

Anyone wishing to put their music on paper can use NotePad to set up a music score and enter clefs, time signatures, key signatures, notes, rests, lyrics, markings and musical instructions. Finale technology automatically does the work of the engraver, arranging the many elements on the page, and prints the sheet music with the same high quality publishers enjoy.

NotePad also serves as an introduction to the entire Finale family of music notation software. Many NotePad users decide they would benefit from additional features and trade up to more advanced Finale products. Because all of these products can share files (including between Windows and Macintosh computers), music created in NotePad is fully compatible with the entire Finale 2008 family of music notation products.

Select Boomwhackers® tuned percussion tubes from the Setup Wizard, and Finale automatically configures the noteheads with the Chroma-Notes™ colored music system and ensures this staff plays back integrated Boomwhackers sample sounds.

Additional new features include Vista Support, improved scanning, new and fully searchable help documentation, expanded MusicXML support, Human Playback® support for additional sound libraries and much more.

"The missing feature in notation software is the ability to add an audio track," stated John Paulson, chief executive officer of MakeMusic, Inc. "By adding this audio feature in Finale 2008, you can hear your songs come to life with a real vocalist, or hear your concerto performed by a real instrumentalist. Finale differentiates itself from competitors with this exciting new capability."

Pre-orders are now being taken; Finale 2008 will begin shipping in July 2007.
