FRANKFURT, Germany – At Prolight  & Sound 2012, HARMAN's JBL Professional is expanding its  revolutionary next-generation VTX Line Array Series with the addition of  two subwoofer models, the VTX S28 and VTX G28.
“In  January, JBL introduced the first product in the VTX Series—the V25—and  the new S28 and G28 subwoofers provide system technicians with a wealth  of configuration options and unprecedented performance,” said Paul Bauman,  Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “These new models truly  represent a breakthrough in subwoofer design.”
The  VTX S28 and G28 are dual 18-inch subwoofers, each employing two 2269H  18" transducers featuring Differential Drive® technology with two voice  coils, two neodymium magnets and extremely high peak-to peak excursion  capabilities to deliver world-class, extended low-frequency performance.  Both models are reverse cardioid-arrayable.
The  VTX S28 can be suspended or ground-stacked and is cardioid-arrayable in  either configuration for improved rear rejection. Compatible with VTX  V25 suspension, the S28 can be suspended at the top of V25 arrays to extend  the effective low-frequency line length, providing improved vertical  pattern control combined with improved rear rejection when used in  cardioid mode.
Alternatively,  S28 arrays (cardioid or front-firing) can be suspended beside or behind  V25 arrays. For theatrical sound design, the S28 can be suspended in the middle of flown V25 arrays to facilitate balcony and floor  coverage by allowing improved under-balcony penetration. Larger cardioid  configurations are also effective where S28 is suspended or  ground-stacked in multiple cardioid blocks, each block consisting of three enclosures.
The  VTX G28 is ground-stackable, but with a practical form factor for  convenient stacking and additional enclosure volume, plus port tuning  that delivers true sub performance down to 22 Hz @ -10 dB.
Like  all JBL Professional products, the VTX subwoofers are comprehensively  tested in JBL’s power testing facilities. Unique in the industry, during  the design phase JBL power testing submits each component and system to 100  hours of continuous, high level input, ensuring that your system will  deliver extraordinary sound even after years of hard use and thousands  of hours of performance.
Like all VTX Series models, the S28 and G28 feature Crown Audio VRack DSP and amplification. VRack is a rugged touring rack fitted with three Crown  I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers, power input panel, and  custom-engineered input/output panels that is available in two  configurations: VRack 12000 and VRack 4 x 3500 are loaded with three IT 12000HD and three IT 4 x 3500HD amplifiers, respectively.
Apart  from the performance advantage of a standard package ensuring that VTX  Series enclosures are optimally powered and processed, VRack ensures  compatibility for cross rental between VTX Network Partners. Since VRack is supplied  with all components installed and internally connected, there is also no  need for laborious rack building; no chance that a component might be  improperly connected; and a dramatically lower chance of connection failure.
VTX’s  patented S.A.F.E. suspension system is streamlined for speed and  efficiency with improved hardware for faster setup with fewer pinning  operations and greater security. A custom-designed protective cover and dolly makes  transport easy and the suspension process fast, efficient and safe.  Vertical Transporters will be available allowing for transport of four  V25 enclosures or three S28 enclosures in either front-firing or cardioid mode.

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN Professional today announced that its JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ sound reinforcement system design software is now available to users as a public beta version. JBL HiQnet Performance Manager had been previously available to a closed group of 60 worldwide beta testers.
JBL HiQnet Performance Manager is a highly refined user interface that facilitates the design of touring and live performance venue sound reinforcement systems. Created especially for touring and theatrical  sound engineering, Performance Manager is an application-specific iteration of the category-leading HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ configuration and control software application for professional-grade audio system integration.
“JBL HiQnet Performance Manager is a powerful tool that makes the design, setup and tuning of a JBL VERTEC loudspeaker system a lot faster and more efficient,” noted Adam Holladay, Market Manager, HARMAN System Development and Integration Group.
“The response from our beta testers has been extremely positive,” continued Holladay. “In venue after venue, JBL VERTEC system engineers have been able to achieve consistently higher levels of performance than before. They note that they are also able to set up a system more quickly, saving time and money. Now that we are making it available in a public beta version, many more users will have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of Performance Manager as a free download.”
The public beta version of Performance Manager is available at http://hiqnet.harmanpro.com. The beta version is functional except that users will need to apply for a  license key in order to go online and access the online operate modes  of certain system devices. An in-depth series of training videos can be  viewed at http://hiqnet.harmanpro.com/training/. The full version of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager will be available in early 2012 at a suggested retail price of $399.
Winner  of a 2011 PLASA Innovation Award and a finalist for the upcoming EMEA  2012 InAVation awards for which voting is currently open, JBL HiQnet  Performance Manager provides a comprehensive, step-by-step workflow that directly  corresponds to real-world system configuration, taking the workflow  paradigm introduced in System Architect 2 to a higher level of  functionality for any live performance audio application. It is fully integrated with JBL’s Line Array Calculator II loudspeaker  configuration and acoustic modeling software.
The  user begins by loading templates of the speaker arrays used in the  system, and then runs Line Array Calculator II for each array as part of  the initial sound design task of determining how many and which type of loudspeakers  are required to cover a given venue. For each array, Performance  Manager automatically loads the passive VERTEC or powered VERTEC DrivePack DPDA line array configuration into the main application  workspace – the first of many automated design processes native to the  software application. Loudspeakers can also be manually loaded into the  templates if desired.
Once  the user defines the required amplifier parameters for the passive  loudspeakers within the arrays, Performance Manager automatically loads  the correct number of Crown Audio VRACK or other user-determined amplifier racks  into the audio system. The software then associates the amplifier  outputs with the bandpass crossover inputs for the selected array and  programs the amplifiers with the correct JBL preset data, as well as gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel  equalization parameters that are determined in JBL’s Line Array  Calculator II as part of the modeling process to optimize sound pressure  level and frequency response over the defined audience geometry.
Representations  of the bandpass inputs for each loudspeaker section are overlaid onto  the arrays, enabling the user to easily visualize the array  configuration, whether JBL DrivePack-powered or driven by external Crown power  amplifiers.  Performance  Manager software also significantly simplifies system-networking configuration – the user can  simply drag and drop devices discovered on the network onto the  pre-configured devices within the Performance Manager workspace to  synchronize all addressing and parameter values.
In  addition, the Performance Manager graphical interface provides embedded  control panels for array calibration, time alignment and system EQ  which utilize input section digital signal processing resources available in either  Crown I-Tech HD power amplifiers or JBL DrivePack-powered loudspeakers  with DPDA digital audio input modules. Input attenuation, equalization,  delay settings and bandpass controls are all readily accessible directly within the main application workspace along  with flexible grouping and comprehensive solo/mute functionality for  system testing.
Once  system tuning is complete, Performance Manager’s Show Mode display is  optimized for the actual live performance, offering appropriate  adjustment control ballistics for equalization and dedicated monitoring interfaces  for levels, speaker loads, thermal conditions and AC power requirements.  The workspace for all stages of Performance Manager’s workflow has a  common design motif, with monitoring functions overlaid on top of the same loudspeaker bandpass representations within  the workspace, making visualization easier and more consistent across  various workflow screens.
HARMAN  HiQnet™ is the world's first connectivity and control protocol that  integrates all product categories in the signal chain for professional  audio systems of all types, size, and applications. American Idol is the country’s most-watched   TV series, and has been the number one show for six years in a row,   thanks to its blend of stars in the making, audience participation and   the often-unpredictable reactions of celebrity judges Randy Jackson,   Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. For American Idol’s 2011   season, wrapping up this week, the main house PA and dialogue system   has included a total of 300 JBL Professional loudspeakers, including   VERTEC® line arrays and Control® Contractor loudspeakers, ensuring the   contestants and judges are clearly heard no matter how loudly the   audience cheers the performers.

The system has been installed in Stage 36 at CBS Television City in   Hollywood. The main system has included 20 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize   line array elements, and the dialogue system has comprised 275 JBL   Control 25 loudspeakers. The system was designed and installed by   Patrick Baltzell and ATK/Audiotek of Valencia, California.

“The look of the set is a big part of the show, so the audio system   could not be visually intrusive,” noted Baltzell. “We needed speakers   that could provide full-range response all in one box, without having   to use separate subwoofers or high-frequency elements, because we   needed to use as few boxes as possible.” The VT4889 line array   elements have been set up in two main groups of 10 speakers each, in   locations selected to deliver even sound coverage to all 620 members   of the studio audience.

For the dialogue system, a compact Control 25   speaker (measuring only 9.3 x 7.4 x 5.8 inches) was placed underneath   every other seat in the audience.  “We needed a distributed audio system in addition to the main music   system because during a broadcast there are sometimes up to 12 or 15   lavalier microphones open and in use at the same time,” noted   Baltzell. “We don’t want to mix all of those through the main PA   system.

With the separate dialogue system, it’s much easier to work   with all those lavalier mics, and achieve better, more articulate   sound for the audience.”  Baltzell added, “Although it’s a music competition, there’s a ton of   dialogue going on between the judges and contestants. On some shows,   there’s actually more dialogue than musical performances, so the   dialogue support system is just as important as the main house PA.”  The series’ 2-night grand finale will be staged in Los Angeles’ Nokia   Theatre L.A. Live on May 24-25 in front of a theater audience of over   7,000, as well as being broadcast on FOX to millions of viewers   watching at home.

When the time came for St. James Cathedral to upgrade its sound reinforcement system, John Teer of Teer Engineering had a specific design objective: the loudspeakers had to blend into the church’s interior, but without any compromises in performance. To meet the audio and aesthetic needs of the Orlando, Florida house of worship, Teer selected HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series column speakers.

Aesthetics was “a huge part of the project,” Teer said. “The church wanted a high-quality sound system that was state-of-the-art but easy to use--and the technology had to be visually unobtrusive.”

“Before we were involved in the project, the initial system design called for big, tour-grade line array clusters hanging right in the middle of the sanctuary, which was unnecessary,” noted Teer, whose Orlando-based firm designed and installed the upgraded audio system.

“The church needed a sound system for spoken word only, and the church’s pipe organ didn’t need any sound reinforcement. So, we recommended going with a smaller-format system with speakers that could be placed much closer to the listeners. We also wanted to locate the speakers closer to the parishioners because there’s a lot of marble in the space, which we had to deal with to make sure there wouldn’t be an excessive amount of reverb.”

“The CBT 100LA was perfect for the application. They have tight pattern control and excellent projection over a long distance,” noted Teer.

The speaker’s wide, even coverage pattern also solved a structural constraint imposed by the cathedral’s interior: “We didn’t have the option of installing the speakers along the columns in the sanctuary, which would have been a logical solution, because we could not cut into them and run cable.”

Because of this, Teer installed nine CBT 100LA speakers throughout the sanctuary, mostly in low visibility areas where the walls meet the ceiling. Teer also placed three JBL VRX928 line array loudspeakers for additional fill where the CBT speakers weren’t practical. The system also features BSS Soundweb London processing, which handles more than 16 zones of audio.

“The system sounds great and the church is extremely happy,” Teer concluded.

Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland is a state-of-the-art, 51,000-capacity facility for sports, concerts and special events. Its waveform-shaped architecture is striking in design, and houses four tiers of seating, with seven stories of floors and two basement levels. Aviva Stadium is the home of the Irish rugby union team and the Republic of Ireland national football team.

Audio for Aviva Stadium is provided by a massive JBL sound system that includes 105 Precision Directivity (PD) Series loudspeakers, augmented by Application Engineered (AE) Series AM6200/64 speakers. The system also includes Crown Audio amplifiers and BSS Soundweb London signal processing, connectivity and control products. The prestigious installation was carried out by the highly experienced, UK-based TG Baker (Sound) Ltd. under the supervision of project manager Tony Mott. The system was sold by Sound Technology, Harman Professional’s distributor in the UK and ROI, who also provided technical assistance via its project support services.

The Aviva Stadium installation is a fully compliant public address-voice alarm (PAVA) system that is massive in scale, with 26 42-U equipment racks, 118 PAVA zones, 59 paging zones and 365 loudspeaker circuits. It has an audio matrix of 172 inputs and 468 outputs, with spare capacity for future input/output expansion. The system was designed to deliver a high speech transmission index (STI), an indication of speech intelligibility, along with a broadband SPL of more than 105dB and speech SPL of more than 101dB.

“During the proposal stage we considered a number of loudspeaker options,” Mott said. “However, having successfully used the PD Series on other stadium projects we knew we could demonstrate to the client that the sound system would meet the performance requirements detailed in the specification.” To fulfill the design, Mott selected JBL PD Series loudspeakers, and by using custom brackets, a variety of speaker orientations and careful attention to directivity control, he was able to achieve uniform sound coverage to virtually every seat in the stadium.

Coverage on the single tier of the stadium’s north stand is accomplished using a combination of PD5200 and PD5300 Series loudspeakers on the edge of the roof. For the other three stands, a horseshoe-shaped array of PD743 loudspeakers is used to evenly cover the longest throw from the gantry to the lower tier. PD5200/95 and PD5200/64 speakers cover the upper tier, and a ring of PD5125 loudspeakers supplies the low frequencies. Five JBL Application Engineered (AE) Series AM6200/64 loudspeakers provide additional coverage.

Audio Visions has fielded a JBL VERTEC® system at the festival for the past five years. With offices in Omaha and Minneapolis, the company is the Midwest’s largest single-source, full-service production company. For the most recent event, Audio Visions provided a main PA system comprising 12 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements per side, with an additional six VT4888 midsize line array elements in use for front fill. A dbx DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management system was in use for front-end processing.

“After five successful years, we’ve grown to know the characteristics of VERTEC very well,” noted Chip Kempke of Audio Visions. “We know that the VT4889 has the performance characteristics needed for this large-scale festival, which features a wide variety of musical acts and styles.”

At an altitude of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), the high elevation of the event location presents a temporary installation challenge. “The thin mountain air requires us to drive the system at a higher level than normal to deliver a high SPL,” said front of house engineer Elliot Nielsen. “The thin air really deadens the sound, so we typically have to push the system very hard. The VT4889 loudspeakers handle the situation without difficulty. The VERTEC system has performed as advertised; it’s an easy-to-use line array with a ton of horsepower and performs predictably in any environment.”

The outdoor stage venue itself presented another challenge. “The roof of the stage is curved, which creates some really weird frequency responses at various locations, and the sound can get a little muddled on the monitor mix side of the stage because of echo reflections from the roof,” said Kempke. “We’ve had to learn what the roof was doing to the sound distribution on stage and in the audience area, and make adjustments to work around it.”

The diverse musical lineup presented yet another test of the system for the Audio Visions crew. “The lineup of artists at this festival ranges from popular and rock to jazz, blues and hip-hop, so we need a system that can handle the varying dynamic contrasts and still provide high-quality sound,” Kempke pointed out. “We’ve found that JBL VERTEC loudspeakers have superior sound quality compared to competitive models, along with the requisite directivity characteristics and power-handling capability for a large-scale outdoor event.”

On a night full of surprises, JBL Professional loudspeakers
were once again called upon at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY® Awards to ensure predictable,
high-quality live sound and audio for television broadcast. Held at the STAPLES
Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, the GRAMMY Awards were broadcast live
in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network. As it has for the past
several years, ATK Audiotek of Valencia, California provided JBL VERTEC® line arrays
for live sound reinforcement, while JBL LSR studio monitors were used in the
critical listening room for the telecast.

The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest Night®, is presented by
The Recording Academy® to honor outstanding achievements in the production and
performance of recorded music. This year’s awards were marked by a variety of
elaborate stage productions bringing together some of the biggest names in music
today, including Lady Gaga, Eminem, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Lady Antebellum, Cee-Lo
Green and Katy Perry. Lady Gaga and Eminem both earned multiple GRAMMY Awards, while
Arcade Fire won Album Of The Year for The Suburbs.

During the telecast, JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors were used to monitor the
broadcast in the critical listening room. Since the critical listening room was set
up in a provisional space at the STAPLES Center, engineers took advantage of the
LSR6300 Series’ on-board RMC Room Mode Correction system to compensate for acoustic
anomalies of the room. “We used a 5.1 JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitor system to
carefully listen to details in the mix, as we have for the past several years,” said
Michael Abbott, Audio Director for the GRAMMY Awards. “Once again, the LSR monitors
performed extremely well and helped us accurately hear the subtleties of the show.”

For live sound reinforcement, ATK Audiotek deployed 70 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize
line array elements in multiple overhead arrays, supplemented with JBL VRX932LA
compact constant-curvature loudspeakers. “With such a variety of performers on stage
during the Awards, and with such elaborate productions, providing live sound for the
GRAMMY Awards poses its own unique set of challenges,” said Scott Harmala, CTO/VP
Engineering, ATK Audiotek. “We have enjoyed tremendous success with the VERTEC line
arrays for the GRAMMY Awards in the past and this year was no different. They
provided powerful and accurate sound throughout the arena.”

ATK Audiotek recently provided audio services for Super
Bowl XLV, marking the 14th straight year the company has been involved in the
country’s biggest sporting event. Once again, ATK Audiotek deployed its
custom-designed cart system with JBL VERTEC® line arrays for the Halftime Show and
Post-Game Show of the Super Bowl, held at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas on
February 6, 2011. The carts were also used for Lea Michele’s rendition of “America
the Beautiful” and Christina Aguilera’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

This year’s Super Bowl, broadcast via FOX Sports, was the most watched in history,
viewed by an estimated 111 million people in the United States alone. The Black-Eyed
Peas starred in the Halftime Show, which also included guest appearances by
guitarist Slash and R&B singer Usher. The Post-Game Show included the Lombardi
Trophy presentation, awarded to this year’s NFL champion Green Bay Packers.

For Super Bowl XLV, ATK Audiotek deployed its custom-designed cart system, which
allows for easy setup between events, and quick transport of the VERTEC loudspeakers
on and off the field. Each of the carts included five JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize
line array elements, which provide an optimal combination of light weight, fidelity
and output power capability, making them ideal for ATK Audiotek’s cart system. ATK
also deployed additional VT4889 arrays that were suspended overhead to supplement
the permanently installed system at Cowboys Stadium.

“The Super Bowl is one of the most unique and challenging events we handle every
year, and our success hinges on our ability to not only provide high-quality audio,
but to set up and tear down our systems within a very stringent timeline,” said
Scott Harmala, CTO/VP Engineering, ATK Audiotek. “The VERTEC line arrays enable us
to stay on schedule while delivering that requisite level of audio performance.”

Loudness Sonorizacao of Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of Brazil’s leading concert audio suppliers, recently provided a large, multi-array JBL VERTEC® line array system for legendary rock band Rush at an outdoor show in Rio de Janeiro. The concert was part of Rush’s “Time Machine Tour” and was held at the Praca de Apoteose (Apotheosis Square) venue, famous as a staging site for Rio’s legendary Carnival.

Rush’s “Time Machine Tour” embarked in July 2010 and is expected to continue through the end of 2011. For the tour, Rush is playing its album Moving Pictures in its entirety for the first time ever. The concerts on the tour also include selections from Rush’s upcoming album, Clockwork Angels, while also featuring performances of Rush’s most popular songs, including “Tom Sawyer,” “Closer to the Heart” and “Limelight.”

The main PA system deployed for Rush by Loudness featured a total of 60 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements. The main left and right arrays each consisted of 18 VT4889 loudspeakers, each accompanied by an array of 12 VT4880A ultra-long excursion arrayable subwoofers. For outfill, Loudness provided arrays of 12 VT4889 loudspeakers per side. The system also included 36 SRX728 floor-stacked subwoofers. Crown I-Tech 8000 amplifiers powered the system.

“We enjoy using the VERTEC line arrays because of their easy setup and their consistent performance,” said Marcio Pilot, co-owner of Loudness Sonorizacao. “The system performed to expectations for the Rush concert. We were very happy with the results.”

Front of house engineer Brad Madix, who has been mixing Rush’s Time Machine tour worldwide, was enthusiastic about the results achieved for the show in Rio.

"Rush usually carries a JBL-loaded line array system from Clair Global," noted Madix.  "But on international tour legs, when we are not carrying our own full rig, I'm always excited when a JBL VERTEC system is available. Used with the V4 DSP presets developed by JBL's Paul Bauman, the VERTEC rig sounds full and powerful with plenty of detail. It really complements the band's musical style. We had a fantastic show in Rio with Marcio and his team from Loudness."

JBL Professional today introduced its EON515XT active loudspeaker.

As the flagship of the iconic JBL powered portable speaker collection, the EON515XT was engineered for durability, high performance and ease of use. JBL has extended the reach of the current EON technology by improving input sensitivity, lowering the noise floor, adding user selectable EQ control and re-voicing the system for peak performance and enhanced audio precision.

"In the development of our PRX600 Series we've learned and implemented quite a few things that enhanced system performance," said Richard Ruse, JBL Director of Marketing for Portable PA. "We knew we could do the same for the EON515XT and quite frankly, we couldn't wait to do it. Through amplifier optimization and restructuring of the gain stages, we've increased the maximum SPL from 129 dB to 132 dB. We've made the system quieter when idling and re-voiced the system for a more even spectral balance. I think it's the most musical EON we have ever built." The 2-way EON515XT incorporates a JBL 2414H high-frequency neodymium compression driver and a 15-inch JBL 265F-1 Differential Drive® dual-voice-coil woofer perfectly matched to a proprietary Crown® Class D amplifier. The system has been re-voiced from previous models for better clarity and frequency balance and now delivers a stout 132dB maximum SPL. "We've raised the bar dramatically," noted Ruse.

The input sensitivity has been increased by 10dB to accommodate keyboards, musical instruments, drum machines and lower output sound reinforcement and DJ mixers. The EON15XT now offers user-adjustable EQ with individual bass and treble controls and a simplified 3-channel mixer configuration—an especially beneficial live performance feature that allows users to plug in multiple instruments and microphones.

Built to take the rigors of the road, the JBL EON515XT has been restyled for discretion with a tough, molded black enclosure, black metal grille, black JBL badge, and charcoal EON grille logo. The EON515XT can be pole-mounted on a subwoofer or tripod stand using its 36 mm pole-mount socket, used in a floor monitor position or flown using its integrated M10 suspension points. It offers two 1/4-inch TRS inputs, one combination XLR/TRS input and an XLR loop-through output for connecting another EON speaker, recording device or for routing to an external devices. Weighing just 32.5 pounds, the EON515XT features multiple grip points designed for comfort, safety and balance.
