FEA Labs is very pleased to announce the Photon Fuzz as the latest pedal to their product lineup.  The Photon Fuzz gets its name from an active component in the circuit that utilizes infrared light to control the fuzz distortion element.  Light is made up of photon particles, so the name represents the action that is at the core of this distinctive fuzz design.  The comprehensive control set provides full control over the tone and makes it possible to dial in just about anything from classic to modern metal fuzz.

The drive and bite controls work in tandem on the guitar or bass signal to define the character of the fuzz tone.  The drive sets the overall gain stage for the distorted signal, which is then driven into the bite stage of the circuit.  The bite control sets the activation point where the fuzz distortion engages upon (bites into) the signal.  The level control adjusts the overall output level of the distorted signal.

The 3-band EQ is an active two stage boost/cut design with the mid band circuit separated from the low and high level circuits.  This two stage design prevents the low and high band circuits from interacting with the mid center frequency and its level.  The EQ circuit sits in the signal path after the distorted signal and each frequency band can be adjusted to a boost/cut of +/- 15dB for generous tone shaping capability.  A pre-fuzz high-pass filter can be set using internal DIP switches, thereby reducing the ultra-low frequencies being processed through the fuzz circuit.

The dry blend control does as the name suggests and adds dry (unprocessed) signal, blended with the distorted signal.  The dry blend is beneficial for use with a bass guitar to preserve the full and natural low-end tone of the instrument, but can also add tonal diversity to a guitar as well.  The dry signal path can also be configured using internal DIP switches to set a low-pass filter so that the higher frequencies and harmonics are removed from the dry tone.

The octave distortion (full wave asymmetric rectifier) stage can be engaged using the additional octave footswitch.  The octave circuit sits after the fuzz and EQ stages, and the control adjusts the amount of the octave affect to apply to the overall fuzz tone.  As with the dry tone, internal DIP switches can be set to apply a low-pass filter which is useful to tame some of the high frequency artifacts that this octave distortion method may generate.

FEA Labs is very pleased to announce the Dual Band Distortion as the latest pedal to their lineup.

The Dual Band Distortion combines two very popular classic distortion tones, plus an octave distortion (full wave rectifier), in a dual band configuration. Add to that a compliment of tone controls, adjustable crossover frequency, dry signal blend, and a distortion band bypass feature to complete an extensive pallet of available distortion tones.

The incoming guitar or bass signal is divided into two bands of frequencies, each with its own distortion type. The frequency at which the low band ends and high band begins is user selectable via the crossover frequency control. As an additional feature, either the high or low band distortion can be bypassed to mix the clean (undistorted) signal in the selected frequency band while the other band continues to provide distortion.

DBD-0001-Front.jpgThe low band offers a classic hard clipping distortion tone using germanium diodes in a unique asymmetrical configuration which adds even order harmonics to the tone. The tone shaping options include the standard drive, (output) level, passive tone control, octave blend, and dry level blend. The octave (full wave rectifier) distortion control acts as a cross fader between the octave distortion and the clean low signal before the hard clipping distortion stage. The dry signal blend control does as the name suggests and adds dry (unprocessed) signal from the low band, which is very beneficial for use with a bass guitar to preserve the full and natural low-end tone of the instrument.

The high band delivers an overdrive distortion tone utilizing two audiophile quality FET (field effect transistor) amplifiers. This application of FET amplifiers results in a smooth (tube-like) overdrive distortion tone that reacts to the style of the player and the way they attack the strings. Along with the standard drive and (output) level controls, the overdrive distortion also includes an active two band cut / boost EQ with controls for mids and highs.

Standard Features:

  • Small footprint design: 4.5" by 3.5"
  • Activation footswitch (stomp switch) with direct bypass when the pedal is not active
  • Dual band configuration with drive and level controls on each
  • Three blend-able distortion types (hard clipping, octave, & overdrive)
  • Adjustable crossover frequency control
  • Passive tone on the low distortion & active two band EQ on the high overdrive
  • Dry signal level blend on the low band
  • Distortion bypass band selection switch
  • Distortion bypass band activation footswitch (stomp switch)
  • 18 volt circuitry powered by a 9 volt battery or standard 9 volt DC adapter

FEA Labs is pleased to announce the latest product in their pedal lineup, the Opti-FET Compressor.

The name of this new pedal comes from its design that utilizes optical elements for compression dynamics and 100% “class A” FET (field effect transistor)-discrete amplification in the audio path. The Opti-FET also employs a unique, user-selectable side-chain control circuit with an onboard 3-band equalizer and a loop for additional control options. The union of these components provides the responsiveness, warm tone, and control options that we believe will make the Opti-FET Compressor a welcome addition to your effects chain, whether you’re a guitar or bass player.

One of the principal goals with this design was to create a “less sterile” and more “effect-y” type compression pedal, and we believe we’ve surpassed our goal with the Opti-FET Compressor. The “class A” FET discrete amplification circuit is popular among the audiophile community for having some of the classic sonic qualities found in tube amplifiers. This classic amplifier design adds noticeable warmth to the compressed audio signal, adding an overall musically pleasing character to the tone. The wide, adjustable compression ratio allows the musician to apply any amount of compression to the signal from very light at 1.5:1 to heavy at 20:1 for generous sustain.

Another design goal for the Opti-FET, as with all of our designs, was to give the musician as much control over their tone as is possible in a pedal format. To this end, along with the full complement of compression settings, we’ve added a selectable equalizer along with an external loop to the side-chain control circuit. The 3-band equalizer allows you to tailor the frequencies upon which to apply more or less compression to the audio signal. The loop feature is provided so you can use an external graphic equalizer or other outboard processors, giving you control comparable to that of many high-end studio compression units.

Standard Features:

  • Small footprint: 4.5” by 3.5”
  • Threshold, ratio, attack, release and gain controls. The control ranges for the attack and release have been optimized for use on both bass and guitar.
  • The COMP LED indicates when the threshold has been reached.
  • The ACTIVATE foot switch places the compressor unit in the signal chain or in Direct Bypass mode.
  • The ACTIVE LED indicates when the pedal is engaged.
  • The EQ and LOOP foot switch enables the three-band equalizer controls for the side-chain control circuit and the external loop feature.
  • Loop send and return jacks are for placing external processors or EQ’s in the compressor side-chain control circuit, when the EQ and LOOP switch is engaged.
  • The SIDE-CHAIN EQ and LOOP LED indicator identifies when the equalizer and external loop features are active.
  • Minimal components in the signal path to maintain the utmost signal quality.
  • The onboard voltage charge pump allows the circuitry to operate at 18volts (+9 and –9 volt rails) from a single 9-volt battery or AC power adapter of 9 volts or greater.
  • The onboard power supply can accommodate power adapter voltages up to 25 volts DC with protection from reversed polarity.

FEA Labs is pleased to announce the FEA Growler pedal as the forth pedal to their lineup. The Growler is designed to add second harmonic warmth for the player who is looking to add that extra "growl" and "punch" to their bass tone. The analog harmonic octave tone generated by the pedal blends with natural tone of the bass guitar to add new dimensions to the fundamental dynamics of the tone. Tone Tweak Ability (building your own tone)
The Growler offers a comprehensive set of controls and features that will allow the player to shape the harmonic tone and create their own signature sound. The dual-channel setup also provides a way to define two distinct sounds and switch between them as needed during live performances. The first channel offers the standard features with variable wet and dry signal blend controls along with an input level boost switch and asymmetric (soft clipping) switch. The second channel extends the tone control by adding a bright level, generator filter switch and TSR (tip ring sleeve) insert jack to allow outboard processing of the harmonic signal. The channel selection is available using a stomp switch so the player can easily switch between their settings as needed. Finally, along with the standard output of the signal from the pedal, a direct out is provided for additional signal path and mixing options. Standard Features:
  • Small footprint design: 4.5" by 3.5"
  • Activation footswitch (stomp switch) with direct bypass when the pedal is not active
  • Channel selection footswitch (stomp switch) for easy activation of either channel as needed
  • Variable dry, wet channel 1, and wet channel 2 controls for adjusting the mix of the original signal (dry) with either of the analog harmonic signals (wet)
  • Input level toggle switch to boost the input signal by +6db and allow for more intense tone processing settings on both channels
  • Asymmetrical clipping toggle switch to add soft clipping to the generated harmonic tone on both channels
  • Variable brightness level control on channel two to add more highs to the harmonic tone as needed
  • Generator filter toggle switch on channel two to change the low bypass filter from 250Hz to 1KHz allowing the harmonic generator circuit to process more of the original signal
  • TRS (tip ring sleeve) insert jack to allow for outboard processing of the harmonic signal using external effects or equalization
  • Direct output jack which provides the unprocessed (dry) signal for additional signal path and mixing options

FEA Labs is very pleased to announce the 2 Channel Mixer pedal as the 3rd product to their lineup. The new mixer pedal is the ideal companion to the FEA Dual-Band Optical Compressor pedals and is designed to take advantage of the dual output feature by combining the signal paths on the other end of the chain. While the mixer was engineered with the FEA dual band compressors in mind, it offers a range of useful features that should work well in any dual channel setup. Variable Phase Correction: The mixer includes a variable phase control on channel 2 to minimize signal cancellation when out of phase signals are added together. The variable control allows the signal to be phase adjusted anywhere between 0 and 180 degrees. This approach using a variable phase control is incorporated in the design because a standard signal inverter switch is typically only useful when the effects on either channel are in a steady state (always on or off). On Demand Boost: The mixer is equipped with an additional footswitch to enable the signal boost feature. The boost effect can be applied to either input channel or both channels and can be selected by a three position rotary switch. The boost level can be adjusted from +3 dB to +10 dB using a variable control as well and there is an LED indicator to show when the boost is active. Additional Features: Signal levels are monitored for internal clipping and 3 LED indicators are included to warn when a signal is too hot. The output amplifier topology is selectable for the Op-Amp or a discrete Class-A JFET amplifier for player preference. A footswitch is provided to turn the 2nd channel on or off and there is an LED indicator to show when the channel is active.
