Quantum Leap Spaces is a new, 24-bit true stereo convolution reverb that sets a new standard by utilizing new impulse recording techniques developed over the past seven years.

Produced and engineered by Nick Phoenix, Quantum Leap Spaces includes custom impulses taken over the past seven years from around the globe, with a focus on the western United States. Concert halls (including the EastWest/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Hall), churches, cathedrals, caverns, recording studios (including EastWest Studios), soundstages, forests, a swimming hall, parking garages, water tanks, a tunnel, vintage plates and custom digital reverb preset impulses ensure you'll find the right space to fit your needs.

Ralph Kessler of masterpinguin supplied additional impulses. "Ralph shares the same passion for reverb impulses that we do. His methods are slightly different, but the results are stunning and state of the art" said Phoenix.

An arsenal of the best gear that Neumann, Neve, Telefunken, TG, Manley, Sennheiser, Fairchild (to name a few) have produced over the past 60 years was used to create Quantum Leap Spaces, along with the Sony DRE S777 sampling reverb and Meitner A-D converters. ATC monitors were positioned in the room/hall to emulate the real world sound projection properties of various instruments. For example, firing the sweep tones from the middle to left rear of the stage, backwards and slightly towards the floor created an impulse taken for a French horn. 1st violin section impulses were taken by firing a series of speakers at an angle towards the ceiling, just like a real section. A fifth speaker with the high end reduced was fired towards the floor to emulate the body of the violins. This same methodology was used to record reverbs for rock instruments in various LA studios. "Usually the speakers used in these convolution sampling sessions are of average quality because you destroy them occasionally, but that was not a compromise we were prepared to make, we wanted everything to be the best quality possible" said Phoenix. Because of this, the reverbs in Quantum Leap Spaces are the best available, and have a fantastic balance of early reflections and room sound that really draws a dry instrument into the space, rather than the usual "sound plus reverb" result.

Quantum Leap Spaces includes a very hi-resolution, true stereo engine that focuses on delivering the very best sound at a very low CPU load. Most impulses are in 8-channel format to accommodate surround mixes. In the end, what makes Spaces unique is that every impulse is special. There is no wading through endless folders of cryptically labeled identical sounding impulses. In fact, Spaces takes the mystery out of choosing reverbs by supplying suitable recommendations for every instrument and style.

EW_Spaces_Screen-456x312.jpg

Quantum Leap Spaces is available for both MAC and PC for $299 MSRP. For more information, or to download a trial version (iLok required) visit http://www.soundsonline.com/spaces.

A modern rock virtual sequel coming 1.11.11

EASTWEST, the industry leader in virtual software instruments, announces QUANTUM LEAP Ministry Of Rock 2, a modern rock toolkit produced by Nick Phoenix, will be released January 11, 2011.

Ministry Of Rock 2 was put together with one goal in mind: to create a virtual (software) instrument capable of producing sounds that could actually produce a hit record or film score without any live drum, bass, or guitar overdubs. The articulations and programming were all reverse engineered from actual performances. The 57 gigabyte collection features LIVE technology which makes multi-sampled drums sound like a live performance.

"Rock music is always in a state of evolution," said Phoenix. "Ministry Of Rock 2 will give users the latest software tools to produce finished tracks. Ministry Of Rock 2 takes the Ministry Of Rock concept to a whole new level of playability and impact."

Recorded at the Legendary EASTWEST Studios in Hollywood, CA, by Phoenix, Doug Rogers, and Rhys Moody, Ministry Of Rock 2 features some of the industries top players like Shane Gibson, guitarist with Stork/Schwarzenator/KoRn, Greg Suran, guitarist with Goo Goo Dolls/Avril Lavigne/Glee, Doug Rappaport, guitartist with Edgar Winter/Potent, and Tal Bergman, drummer with Billy Idol, LL Cool J, Rod Stewart, Terence Trent Darby, Joe Zawinul.

The drums for Ministry Of Rock 2 were recorded in East West Studio 1 on three large rock kits from DW, Gretsch, and Ludwig, along with 6 additional snares. Top vintage and modern gear from Neve, Neumann, Telefunken, AKG, Manley, Fairchild, Royer, Chandler and Meitner were employed for a legendary sound. Repetition samples were recorded for everything as well as extreme dynamics and three mic positions for drums (close + room, or close + compressed room) to dial in the desired sound and an ultra-realistic performance. Any drum from any kit can be selected to create a custom kit, plus there are 6 additional snare drums to choose from.

Ministry Of Rock 2 guitars were recorded on Fender Jaguar, Fender Telecaster Thinline, Carvin 7 String, Baritone, Gibson Les Paul, and Schecter 7 String through Fender, Divided By Thirteen, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Bogner and Vox Amps. Samples feature round robin, hammer on and pull off legato, sliding legato and dozens of other techniques. Dual channel recordings let you pick a wicked real amp sound or use the direct signal with popular plug-ins.

Ministry Of Rock 2 includes all of the remastered content from Hardcore Bass and Hardcore Bass XP plus an all-new 5 string Musicman Stingray bass with 7000 samples and true legato. Fender, Hofner, Gibson, Silvertone, Rickenbacker, Musicman and Lakland basses were recorded through large bass rigs. No wimpy dry sounds.

QUANTUM LEAP Ministry Of Rock 2 will be available on 1.11.11 for $395 MSRP. A $295 upgrade price is available for Hardcore Bass and Hardcore Bass XP users. For more information, visit http://www.soundsonline.com/Ministry-of-Rock-2 or http://www.soundsonline-europe.com/Ministry-of-Rock-2 for European customers.

40 gig collection of virtual instruments, some dark and eerie, and many which have been purposely—and skillfully!—mangled, distorted, or effected out of all recognition.

EASTWEST has released THE DARK SIDE, created and produced by Doug Rogers and David Fridmann, THE DARK SIDE is the first of its kind: an unconventional, hip and exciting collection of virtual instruments, some dark and eerie, and some which have been purposely—and skillfully!—mangled, distorted, or effected out of all recognition.

THE DARK SIDE provides inspiration for all composers and artists that are looking for unique instruments, designed to work for everything from alternative to symphonic rock, and of course, film, TV, and game music production.

THE DARK SIDE includes a vast, 40 Gigabyte collection, including dark and eerie instruments, and highly processed drums and percussion, basses, guitars, ethnic, keyboard, strings, and effected instruments, all organized into instrumental groups so you can create complete tracks.

Creativity without limits!

"THE DARK SIDE idea came to me when I was mentoring a young alternative group about some demos they sent me. To my ears, the tracks didn't sound tough enough for their intended market, so I told them they needed to toughen up their sound," said Doug Rogers, Founder and Award-Winning Producer at EASTWEST. "I looked around for sounds that could accomplish this and found absolutely nothing, even in our own vast collection. I saw this huge, gaping hole in the market that needed to be filled. Then and there, I decided to make it my next project after my recent pristine orchestral productions, a complete aural turn-around."

Rogers partnered with Grammy Award-Winning record producer David Fridmann, who's unconventional (and successful) work with the likes of MGMT, The Flaming Lips, and Weezer to name a few he had admired. Fridmann's "no rules" style of production was exactly what Rogers was looking for to help produce THE DARK SIDE instruments.

Once they got started, they were like bulls in a china shop: mass aural destruction was the name of the game. They turned traditional instruments into highly processed drums, percussion, basses, guitars, ethnic, keyboards, strings, and FX, all organized into instrument groups for easy audition and recall.

Rogers and Fridmann not only tapped into a wealth of recording and producing experience for THE DARK SIDE, but had the gear to match. Many individual instruments were processed through 5 or 6 effects units, some of the vintage and esoteric tube variety owned by the pair.

THE DARK SIDE more distorted and mangled instruments are intended to be used with cleaner instruments to make them really stand out in a mix, or to disturb the senses. With today's brick-wall limiting, distorted instruments may be the only product trick left to make an instrument stand out in a mix, a successful production technique used often by Radiohead, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, etc.

As the project progressed, they realized the instruments would work for almost every style from alternative to symphonic rock, and THE DARK SIDE name was chosen as a play on words between both styles of music. However, these instruments would be equally at home in Dance, Electronica, and even Hip Hop.

THE DARK SIDE includes EASTWEST's PLAY 2 software, which can operate standalone or as a plug-in inside popular DAW hosts that support VST, Audio Units, and RTAS.

TheDarkSideInterface.jpg

THE DARK SIDE is available for Mac and PC for $395 MSRP. Complete product information, demos, and ordering information is available at http://www.soundsonline.com/the-dark-side.

Orphica Piano - produced by Realsamples (SKU: RS-OPM; MSRP $ 125.00)
The Orphica Piano library offers an very special little piano: Invented by Carl Leopold Röllig, the small portable piano type was exclusively built by piano maker Joseph Donal at the end of the 18th century.

Produced for merely about 15 years, the Orphica remains one of the rarest pianos today – worldwide, only 30 instruments have been preserved at the very most. Inventor Röllig was reminded of the “Lyre of Orpheus”, so he chose the name accordingly for what happens to be a predecessor of today’s portable keyboard.

The instrument featured in this sample library was built around 1798 and offers a slinky, charming and lively piano tone unlike any regular piano sound – thanks to its small size featuring three octaves, it has a different main focus: Twinkle-toed, yet present with chocolate-like mids and with the typical piano-like grace, it can be great for any piano track asking for a fresh, unconsumed sound.

French Harpsichord - produced by Realsamples (SKU: RS-FHM; MSRP $ 145.00)
The French Harpsichord library features a double-manual instrument by renowned French builder Nicolas Pigalle. The instrument – built in Dijon in 1771 – features an “enchanting sound with singing clarity and a substantial bass”, as Professor Beur-mann explains.
These qualities - along with its huge tone which also manages to bring out its deli-cate, sophisticated finesse and detail – make it is an excellent representation of the French style. “It is one of only two surviving harpsichords from Dijon, a city once so rich in musical tradition, the other also being by Pigalle.”, he continues.

Despite its age of almost 250 years, the harpsichord still remains in excellent condition. It is now available for the first time in the sampler with the French Harpsichord library, presented in its original Valotti-tuning at 383 Hz. Based on its two manuals and different registers, the Pigalle harpsichord offers lots of unqiue sounds, sampled with 5 different register combinations, including the upper 8´, lower 8´ (principal 8´), the 4´, both 8´ as well as the “tutti” combination of both 8’ registers and the 4’ recorded together.

Like all harpsichords, the instrument is not touch-sensitive in the sense of a piano. However, even if the differences are minuscule, not any given note will sound exactly the same due to different resonances of body and strings.

Until now, many keyboards and samplers represented harpsichords by always triggering off the exact same digital sample, leaving a cold and sterile sounding impression. In order to improve upon previous recreations and to pay tribute to the liveliness and depth of this antique instrument, we captured 8 variations of each note (4’ register: 4 variations of each note).

The release sounds of the keys are also of major importance: What was originally side noise is now often overlooked and even simply left out in artifical simulations, resulting in a very abstract overall picture. Therefore, we recorded 4 release samples of each note.

The sample library consists of more than 3400 single samples. To start right away, presets are available for all common sample formats including HAlion®, Kontakt2® and higher, EXS24® and GigaStudio3®. For the critical task of recording the harpsichord, we employed custom-made Wag-ner™ U47w® tube microphones in conjunction with Crane Song™ Flamingo® pre-amps and Universal Audio™ 2192® digital converters to do the instrument justice. For maximum sound quality, we recorded in 192 khz/24 bits resolution, downsampled to 44.1 khz/24 bits.

In addition to the samples, the library contains an essay in English from Professor Andreas E. Beurmann himself, explaining both the historical and musical background of the instrument.

Format: Multiformat Library (EXS24, Giga, Kontakt, HALion, WAV)

Italian Harpsichord 3 - produced by Realsamples (SKU: RS-IH3M; MSRP $ 125.00)
The Italian Harpsichord III library features an instrument built around 1690 by an anonymous maker. Featuring three sounds – a front and a rear 8’ register as well both together – it allows for the traditional rich and slick Italian harpsichord tone, of-fering additional flexibility by choosing the adequate 8’ or using the gentle 2 x 8’ combination with its inspiring and complex harmonics.

While it is very typical for the Italian style to feature a housing seperated from the painted cabinet, this instrument is one of the rare Italian harpsichords with a fixed housing. Instead, it belongs to the category of so-called “false inner-outer” instru-ments: The edges of the body as well as the offset cheeks are used to pretend that it features a separate housing.

Although the keyboard is showing signs of wear, the harpsichord still remains in fully playable condition despite its age. It is now available for the first time in the sampler with the Italian Harpsichord III library, presented in its original Kirnberger III-tuning at 382 Hz, captured with all three register variations - front 8’, rear 8’ and both 8’ registers together.

Like all harpsichords, the instrument is not touch-sensitive in the sense of a piano. However, even if the differences are minuscule, not any given note will sound ex-actly the same twice due to different resonances of body and strings.

Until now, many keyboards and samplers represented harpsichords by always triggering off the exact same digital sample, leaving a cold and sterile sounding impression. In order to improve upon previous recreations and to pay tribute to the liveliness and depth of this antique instrument, we captured every sampled register with 8 variations of each note.

The release sounds of the keys are also of major importance: What was originally side noise is now often overlooked and even simply left out in artifical simulations, resulting in a very abstract overall picture. Therefore, we recorded 4 release samples of each note.

EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP announces the debut of its latest release, HOLLYWOOD STRINGS virtual (software) instrument — a collection of orchestral string instruments with unprecedented control over sound and performance. Recording for HOLLYWOOD STRINGS took place at the famous EASTWEST STUDIO 1, the same studio where many Hollywood soundtracks and television themes were recorded with a live orchestra. Heading this project were co-producers DOUG ROGERS, NICK PHOENIX and THOMAS BERGERSEN and sound engineer SHAWN MURPHY. Joining Rogers and Phoenix as co-producer on HOLLYWOOD STRINGS is Thomas Bergersen, a highly respected composer and orchestrator, and Phoenix's partner in trailer music company "Two Steps From Hell" (http://www.twostepsfromhell.com/). His extensive experience in composing for orchestras and with virtual orchestras made him a perfect fit for the multi award-winning team of Rogers and Phoenix. Shawn Murphy, is an ACADEMY AWARD, C.A.S. (Cinema Audio Society), BAFTA, and EMMY award-winning sound engineer who has recorded and mixed the scores for more than 300 feature films including ET: the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, all five Harry Potter films, Titanic, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Bourne Ultimatum, Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, The Passion Of The Christ, X-Men: The Last Stand, Memoirs of a Geisha and Ice Age. "Murphy was an obvious choice for this project; who better to obtain that quintessential Hollywood sound other than someone with his credits," says Rogers. "HOLLYWOOD STRINGS looks to expand on the success we achieved with EASTWEST/Quantum Leap Symphonic OrchestrA by providing a perfect large scoring stage sound and a more intimate scoring stage sound with divisi capability." "The sound of these virtual strings are as good as it gets," says Phoenix. "We have one of the top sound engineers in the business, a famous and beautiful sounding recording studio, the most incredible selection of microphones available, the best analog and digital recording equipment, and top Hollywood string players — how could we go wrong?" "I've used many virtual orchestras over the last decade, including some I developed with other composers, and some I developed myself. With each new development, I got one step closer to my ideal compositional tool." says Bergersen. "HOLLYWOOD STRINGS includes features that I consider necessary if you want to create realistic orchestral strings on your DAW." HOLLYWOOD STRINGS has many groundbreaking features not found in any other virtual strings collection. Finger position is, for the first time, controllable by the user, so they can play as far up the strings as they want, and get a fuller more romantic Hollywood sound. Vibrato intensity and extensive dynamics are controllable by the user. Extensive multi-dynamic true legato has been sampled for all sections in three different categories: slurred, portamento, and bow change. This results in unsurpassed legato performance that has never been available in the sample world. HOLLYWOOD STRINGS has five user-controllable microphone positions including main pickup (Decca tree), mid pickup, close pickup, surround pickup, and an alternate vintage circa 1945 RCA ribbon room pickup. Collectively, EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP HOLLYWOOD STRINGS offers unprecedented control over sound and performance, and is a must have compositional tool for serious composers.
